Create Recovery Media Windows 8 without USB drive

Hi,

I recently bought a T530 with Windows 8 pre-installed. I want to create recovery disc(s). However, in the "Create a recovery media" wizard, I don't have the option of selecting DVDs if tick the option "Copy the recovery partition to the media". I have a bunch of DVDs lying around and I would like to use them. Not to mention that I don't intend to buy USB drive just for this purpose.

Any help is appreciated.

Thank you,

Hi chaserman,

I understand how frustrating it can be to have media that you want to use for a particular purpose but are unable to.

Unfortunately Windows 8 does not support that recovery option.

Re: Create Recovery Media Windows 8 without USB drive

Oh, that's sad. Thanks for answering, though!

So, if I untick that option of copying the partition, I get to write to a CD. What does this CD have?
It asks me to label that Windows 8 repair disc. What can I do with that CD?

Re: Create Recovery Media Windows 8 without USB drive

chaserman,

The repair disk allows you to Startup Repair, System Restore, System Image Recovery, Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool, and Command Prompt.

"In short, the System Recovery discs return your PC to the state it was when first purchased, scrapping all your data while along the way. The System Repair disc, by contrast, offers tools to help bring your ailing PC back to life, keeping all your valuable files safe.

When in trouble, always try your System Repair disc first, as it may solve your problem. Only use the System Recovery Discs as a last resort, as they wipe out everything you’ve created since buying your PC."

Re: Create Recovery Media Windows 8 without USB drive

Thanks. I guess I will use my camera's memory card to create the 16GB thingy. Then I will convert it into an image from there.

Thanks for your help.

Glad I was able to assist.

Just remember that you can only create it one time.
You'll have to save it and keep up with it from then on.

Re: Create Recovery Media Windows 8 without USB drive

Hi,

We bought a Lenovo laptop last weekend for my wife. I'm trying to create a recovery CD or DVD so that if the hard drive crashes, I can re-install the Windows-8 operating system. I don't care about the data on the computer; we have adequate backup processes in place for that.

Can you indicate the procedure to create a recovery DVD that allows me to re-install the Windows operating system if I have to re-format the hard drive? I don't care about the other junk that comes with it, just the operating system and any device drivers that are needed to run the laptop.

Thanks,

Eric Grivel

Re: Create Recovery Media Windows 8 without USB drive

Hi egrivel,

As stated above, there is no option to create optical recovery media.  You can use a flash drive.  8G 16G I believe, but verify that when running the utility.  Make sure "copy the recovery partition" is checked.

[edit] 16G flash drive size.

I was under the impression a 16GB or greater USB stick was required to capture the full Lenovo image.

I've seen 8G referenced in some documents, but you're right.  That link I posted talks about a 16G drive.

That would be the safe size to assume.

Thanks for pointing that out.

[edit] For the record, the recovery drive I created on a Twist yesterday used 7,421,837,312 bytes.  Still, this probably varies with machine type and Think vs. Idea.  As cheap as flash drives are, it's best to just assume 16G, I think.  Thanks again for the correction.

[more edit] Out of curiousity I tried creating another recovery drive.  This was not allowed with earlier OSs.  The Twist is creating a second drive as I type.  Interesting.  I'm not sure if this is something new, or an oversight...

Also - on this machine anyway - it asked for an 8GB flash drive.
