Displayport worked for a long time, stopped after docking

Hey community,

So I got this work computer, a fine T510. I connect it to a big, high res Dell monitor (at home now, don't have the model). The monitor is 2560 x 1600, and I connect via displayport. Dual link DVI doesn't go that high apparently.

So everything's been dandy, until today. Today I decided that hooking up a mess of cables everyday sucks, so I got a (new) docking station and put it together. Displayport cable, as with everything else, connected to the docking station.

It was fine for 15 minutes. Then, after idling, I guess the monitor went to sleep, and now it won't wake up.

I tried all the standard things. Both displayport ports on the docking station, the port on the computer with the computer off the docking station, driver update, several restarts, Fn F7. Nothing works.

I also tried a DVI cable. That works fine, and I'd stop there if not for the loss of resolution.

Win 7 64 bit, up to date. Help?

Re: Displayport worked for a long time, stopped after docking

Hi there ben_pcc,

This may sound silly but check to make sure the displayport is fully connected to the back of the docking station; I've read a few instances of the cable being sensitive and if it's not firmly in place, it may not function properly. You also said that the displayport on the Thinkpad also is no longer working? Which drivers have you updated and which docking station do you have?

Best Regards,

Ed

Re: Displayport worked for a long time, stopped after docking

Hello Ed,

I tried another cable. Two ports on the station and one on the computer stlil don't work.

Display drivers (both Intel and Optimus) are up to date, as is monitor inf file.

It's a Mini Dock Plus Series 3, the monitor is a Dell 3008WFPt.

There's a slight chance the issue is in the monitor displayport, as the computer works fine connected to a different model monitor via displayport. But, I don't think that's the case, not only because that'd be a crazy coincidence but also becuase the monitor can tell the cable is plugged in (else it says "not connected").

Thanks!

Check that the monitors menu does not have to have the input video port specified. It may not be auto sensing and you need to tell it which one is being used.

Not sure what' you're saying there.

Update: problem definitely is in the computer. The other monitor I tried went exactly the same way: worked for a bit, now sleeps forever.

Re: Displayport worked for a long time, stopped after docking

I referred to menu or settings setup of the monitor. The all have one via a button usually. If that is not the default or active video in there will not be a response. Owners manual would clarify.

But you are now saying the one that worked does not! Sounds like there is more going on then. Process of elimination. Try the VGA port and see if the monitor is alive etc and go from there.

Re: Displayport worked for a long time, stopped after docking

Tried DVI and it works.

The monitors are clearly fine.

Re: Displayport worked for a long time, stopped after docking

Update: sometimes works with Duplicate in Fn F7. Not always. That's way low res so no help anyway.

Reinstalled Optimus driver, no help.

Re: Displayport worked for a long time, stopped after docking

ben_pcc,

You were able to get it to work? I see this marked as solution provided but you said you tried with a DVI cable. You mentioned that the displayport worked briefly on another monitor and then stopped working again like it did before. You also mentioned using a different cable and trying other ports, did you mean a totally different displayport cable?

I just wanted to make sure you got it to work the way you originally wanted to.

Ed

*Edit* after solution provided was removed.

Nah, I'd accidently marked it solved. Unmarked, sorry about that.

Yes, different cable. Different manufacturer.
