Docked T430 - will not detect external keyboard at boot

My company has several hundred T430 laptops being used with the ThinkPad Mini Dock Series 3, type 4337-15U.  The scenario is:

* A USB2.0 Keyboard is plugged into the dock.

* A completed powered off laptop is put into the dock and powered on.

* The keyboard is not detected.

* We have keyoards from various manufacturers (Dell, Lenovo, Microsoft).

* There are no problems if the keyboard is plugged directly into one of the laptop USB ports.

* Other USB devices seem to work fine (i.e., Mouse, printer, etc.)

* We're running Windows 7 SP1.  All laptops have Bitlocker encryption enabled.

I checked the BIOS settings and nothing really stands out.  Has anyone seen this before?  Any thoughts on how to remediate the issue?

Thanks!

Re: Docked T430 - will not detect external keyboard at boot

Hi Wes,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I’m sorry to hear that external keyboard is not working in your Lenovo ThinkPad T430 when plugged into dock.

Could you try the below mentioned steps?

  • Go to control panel, Open Device Manager.

  • Scroll down to the bottom of the Device Manager Window, and click on “Universal Serial Bus Controllers” to expand it.

  • Right-click on the first entry in the expanded list named “USB Root Hub,” and select Disable from the context menu.

  • Right-click once again on that same “USB Root Hub” entry, and select Enable from the context menu.

  • If it works, the list of items under “Universal Serial Bus controllers” should refresh, and you should see some additional items in the list.  The USB ports on the docking station and devices connected to them should be working once again.

If the above said didn’t help resolve your concern, try uninstalling all the drivers listed under USB Root hub. Restart the system and click on scan hardware changes in device manager. System will auto detect all the new hardware and will install the drivers appropriately.

Hope this helps!

Best regards,

Mithun.

Re: Docked T430 - will not detect external keyboard at boot

Mithun:

Thank you very much for your reply, but unfortunately it had no effect.  I followed your steps and then shut the T430 down.  I plugged the keyboard directly into the docking station and turned the machine on.  When it prompted for my BitLocker password it would not accept any entry from the keyboard at all.  I had to plug it directly into one of the USB ports directly on the laptop in order for it to work.

Don't know if this matters, but my keyboard is a Microsoft Natural Keyboard Elite.

Re: Docked T430 - will not detect external keyboard at boot

Is there a power supply plugged into the dock? In the BIOS, under config/USB, is BIOS support enabled?

Yes, I have a 90w power supply plugged into the dock.  Also, BIOS support is enabled in Config/USB in the BIOS.

I use the same configuration on a T430s, but with a disk password, not bitlocker

Unfortunately, BitLocker is a requirement of my company and it's not something I can change.  I may be wrong, but I don't think BitLocker is the issue.

Re: Docked T430 - will not detect external keyboard at boot

It seems unlikely, but it's all I can think of. I use a T430s and a 4337 dock all the time with an external keyboard and the kb is available to enter the password at startup

Re: Docked T430 - will not detect external keyboard at boot

Just curious.... what is the make/model of your keyboard?  I've heard that it's possible that this condition exists with non-Lenovo keyboards.

I have used several keyboards. The one I have now came from someone named unicomp
