Enable Edrive on T450s

2015-06-03, 19:41 PM

Has any one been able to enable edrive on the T450s.

Intel SSD Pro Administrator Tool shows that the drive is Opal Ready. But when i try to enable edrive i get this error.

Error: enabling eDrive with this tool is not supported on the selected Intel
SSD. Please ensure the tool and the drive's firmware are up to date.

Anyone have a suggestion?

If the SSD came from Lenovo, it's not an eDrive.  Lenovo doesn't sell any eDrive-capable SSDs.

This helped me too

Someotherguy,

I'm not sure this is true. I've been following the other threads about enabling eDrive on the Lenovo laptops and have found the following.

I have a T450 with an intel Pro 2500 drive (intel ssdsc2bf180a5l) which according to Intel is Opal 2 and meets all the requirements for eDrive. Ref: http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/solid-state-drives/ssd-pro-2500-series-edrive-solutions-blueprint.html

I'm trying to use the intel SSD Pro tool to enable the eDrive functionality but I get an error:
Error: enabling eDrive with this tool is not supported on the selected Intel SSD. Please ensure the tool and the drive's firmware are up to date.
Ref: http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/solid-state-drives/ssd-pro-2500-series-edrive-enabling-video.html

I used your tool to determine if it is, but the IEEE 1667 supported (IDENTIFY word 69 bit 7) = 0 shows that it is not. I think this would change if i were able to enable the eDrive through the intel tool.

So according to intel, this IS an eDrive. Now i'm trying to figure out why I cannot enable it.

I spoke to Lenovo Hardware support, then software, then hardware... even the supervisor. I highly doubt they understand what i'm attempting to do and simply won't help. They insist that my drive is a Pro 2400 based on their information but I kept telling them that I used a few utilities from intel to verify the drive model in addition to cross referencing the information on their website.

It seems like they have loaded their own firmware which shows as LVTi in the Intel SSD Drive Toolbox. I tried booting an ISO from Intel with the latest SSD firmware but i cannot get the laptop to initialize the boot (with many other images as well, which all work fine on other computers)

Using the Admin tool, here are my results.

c:\Users\paul\Downloads\Intel_SSD_Pro_Administrator_Tool_win64>SSDProAdminTool_1
.1.0_win64.exe -drive_index 0 -enable_edrive

So it seems like Lenovo is selling an OPAL drive and not allowing us to turn on features such as eDrive, the reason one would get the drive. Their lack of support is infuriating, especially when they tell you that you have a different SSD and insist that it is working and everything is fine.

Intel forum confirms that this is custom firmware and that Lenovo would have to provide a tool to enable this.

I find all of this a bit insane. First, Lenovo support insists I have a hard drive that does not exist, then they say its a software issue, and the software department says its a hardware issue. I don't know about you, but IMO firmware falls under hardware (software that runs directly on hardware... hence FIRM ware).

Lenovo, care to chime in? Why would you sell an OPAL enabled drive and not allow a customer to enable eDrive?

I believe Lenovo abandoned the edrive functionality on the 2015 models simply because the lack of edrive decommissioning tools from Microsoft. Separating an edrive provisioned to a windows installation requires surgery, popping out the drive, reading the 32 character string and run PSID revert. From Lenovo's perspective this would choke their support dep with calls reg "defect SSD's".

They should still provide tools for advanced users. I hate when a vendor disables a standard feature that otherwise you'd be able to control without any fuss at all. To get this functionality would require a company to purchase replacement SSD's for all of the laptops.

Hi @someotherguy

I'm also strugling to enable eDrive on my X250 with the Intel 180GB SSD (Lenovo OEM). Coul you help me too?

Now Bitlocker runs in software mode, while the Intel SSD fully support eDrive, I would really like to take advantage of this on my Windows 10 Pro install.

Thanks!
