Excessive hard drive seek noise

2009-05-18, 8:15 AM

Any ideas?  Since a few days ago my (2 month old) T500 has been bugging the heck out of me (understatement) with this constant hard drive seek noise.  You normally expect short bursts of it when accessing large amounts of data etc. but this has been literally non-stop, anytime the computer is on (regardless if anyone is actually doing anything on it).

Hello timosy,

it would be helpfull if you can tell us your OS and did you install anything before this did happen?

Also I would suggest to download Process Explorer from Microsoft page and tell us, which process make your hdd running that way.

Vista Ultimate.

To the best of my knowledge, nothing was installed.  I may have uninstalled/installed an updated audio driver from Lenovo, but that should be it.  I am not entirely sure what I should be looking for in process explorer, but I can provide screenshots of whatever you need to see.

Ok,

if it´s Vista the it´s problably the indexing service or R&R is making back ups constantly.

Please check in Procexx Explorer, which process will use cpu time, when the issue occur.

Indexing service is turned off and I have no idea how to check how constantly R&R is making backups... but its not a service I want to turn off.

The systems information window of process explorer shows pretty much flat lines ~0-1% for both CPU & I/O Bytes, RAM is flat ~1GB.  Somewhat of a mystery.

Then have a look at you hdd space and check if it´s decreasing.

It might be Vistas shadow copy function or an automatic defragmentation program.
