External dual display configuration questions

Hello,

I have a T500 224235U with Mobile Intel 4 Series Express Chipset Family (v. 7.15.10.1556)/Vista Business 32. In order to buy decent and correct monitors (to work as close to native resolution as possible), I need to know the following:

- How do I know which of PM45, GM45,GS45, GL40 or GS40 I actually have in my computer;

- What is the max resolution from the VGA port (and DP if different);

- What happens to max resolution if I use a DP to DVI converter

- Will these numbers stay the same when docked (mini or advanced dock)

- I intend to buy a Matrox Dual head 2Go. Anyone tested this ?

Thanks a lot to anyone who could help me.

Re: External dual display configuration questions

Bookmark this page, it's the entry point to the Lenovo support pages for your 2242-35U Vista T500.

You see there you have the Intel X4500HD Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA). That comes with the Intel G45 chip, see here.

For more details on your hardware, see the hardware maintencance manual in the user guide section link.

For latest drivers see the link to the downloads and drivers section (in chronological order) or the Drivers and software document in the results field (in functional order.)

I am no expert in external monitors but in general I see that people are successfully using higher resolutions than Lenovo are willing to commit to. So you might be  better off asking a specific question in the forum, is somebody successfully using resolution xxxx by yyyy on VGA/DVI/DP on their Intel integrated graphics only T500.

You can expect the limiting factor to be your T500, not the dock. The advanced minidock will for instance support whatever DVI resolution the T500 can handle. (I have no experience with separate graphics cards in the advanced dock.)

Re: External dual display configuration questions

zilla,

Thx a lot for all your valuable information. I had gone to those links previously - I like to search a bit before asking questions.

Fact is that I don't quite trust what we can see there. It says :

Original description: P8400(2.26GHz), 2GB RAM, 160GB 7200rpm HD, 15.4in 1280x800 LCD, Intel X4500HD, CDRW/DVDRW, Intel 802.11agn wireless, Bluetooth, Modem, 1Gb Ethernet, UltraNav, Secure chip, Fingerprint reader, 6c Li-Ion, WinXP Pro

where I actually have a T9400, 3GB RAM, 320 GB 7200rpm, etc... and Vista Business 32. So, is it really a X4500HD ? Whatever it is, it still doesn't say how far I can go with it regarding resolution.

I have digged into the advanced dock a bit, but could not find good info on it regarding the addition of a graphics card. Did anybody try that ?

Thx again.

Re: External dual display configuration questions

Sounds like you are not the first owner of the T500. Memory and hard disk is customer upgradable as of course is the operating system. So only question is really CPU.

Now I learnt just yesterday that the CPU is not soldered to the motherboard but the GPU is. So it is possible somebody has changed the CPU on your machine but the only way to have changed the graphics card would have been by  replacing the motherboard.

Have you checked that the system internally (from the motherboard) gives the same type-model info as on the sticker on the bottom of your T500? There are probably multiple ways of doing that -- one way is to look at system info in Start -- All Programs -- Thinkvantage -- Access Help.

Others will have to help you with the advanced dock -- I just know it's getting obsolete -- for instance it has the old Ultrabay of the T6x so Ultrabay adapters for the T500 will not fit. Also i have seen in the forums complaints that the only graphics cards it supports are also obsolete. So we had been expecting Lenovo to announce a new advanced dock for the T500 generation. In the meantime I just got the Advanced Minidock where I am happy with my Thinkvision 22" DVI monitor with the same native 1680x1050 resolution as my ATI discrete graphics T500 LCD. But that isn't a solution fory your Intel integrated graphics T500 with 1280x800 LCD resolution.

Re: External dual display configuration questions

ps I see from the tabook that 2242-55U comes with the T9400 processor. Might you have misread the model on the sticker? Anyway 55U has built in camera -- 35U doesn't.
