[FAN FOUND] T520 what is the best heatsink that will work well with an i7 2960xm and fit in a T520

2017-07-04, 13:38 PM

I have had this laptop for a few months now. I am planning to upgrade the processor. I'm really just looking for a fan/heatsink to combat it's insane heat. Is there even a powerful enough fan, if so will it withstand OC for longer amounts of time. Even 24 hours. Help.

To all who have read my request and those who will read this will this be sufficient http://m.ebay.com/itm/262933210164?_mwBanner=1

This is your 3rd nearly identical post.  Have you read the responses to the first 2? The 55W fan is only used on the W520 models.  It will NOT fit on the T520 integrated graphics motherboard.  I checked and the mounting screws are in different locations.  The fan you picture is smaller so it would not cool as well.

I also don't know if the power circuitry on the T520 integrated graphics board would be sufficient for the CPU's higher draw.

Intel QM67chipset shows it will handle one of the 3rd gen quads i7-3720QM 45watt. I haven't seen on cheap enough...yet - to experiment.

That fan/heat sink p/n quickly searched shows its for Ultrabook X1... just out of curiosity I ordered one and will look at it.

I hacksawed one of the cpu/gpu copper fan/sinks and added some copper for my t520 i7 2820qm and under load it gets up there in heat but doesn't ever click off.

It won't work out of the box, you will need a heavy BIOS mod (like Coreboot mod) to get it working.

The heatsink won't fit, the design is completely different.

Re-using the fan only will probably not work either, the X1 fan is much thinner and IIRC smaller in diameter than then T520.

A W520 heatsink won't work on a T520 mobo, the screw holes are in different places.

I modded one of my Intel T520's with a i7-2670QM, I'm using an nVidia T520 heatsink (the small copper part covering the graphics chip "hanging" on empty space) in combination with Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut thermal compound. So far everything works perfectly, but I have to say that I never stressed the CPU to its maximum.

The only modification needed is to adapt/remove the black plastic cover on the underside of the CPU heatsink, since the CPU die for the quads is much bigger than the ones in the dual cores.

The difference in heatsinks between T520 and W520 are easily visible in the HMM manual: click me!,  check chapter 9 - 1150 for some pictures.

T520 / i7-2720QM *2.2/3.3ghz) with a stock i3 heat sink runs cooler than any cpu I've ever tried in any sandy bridge laptop.
Do use a extra high temp rated copper/synthetic grease based thread anti-seize compound for heat sink compound. Basically just a fine cu powder with minimal 500F syn-grease binder.
My tests long time ago cooled better than the typical artic silver & similar.
Copper is easy to work with, add more mass, the faster it draws away heat.

I have come up with a new set up for my t520 i5 2520m

i7 2960xm - I will find a link later

t520 i7 heatsink- http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lenovo-Thinkpad-T520-T520i-Fan-Heatsink-75Y5784-/122501499881?epid=1603926516&hash=item1c85a88be9:g:C0wAAOSw42dZHJbX

Artic silver 5 thermal paste - https://www.ebay.com/p/arctic-silver-5-high-density-thermal-compound-3-5g/1847919620?iid=251942490950#UserReviews  (Scroll up)

This ram - http://www.ebay.com/itm/292178593174?vectorid=229466&lgeo=1&item=292178593174&rmvSB=true

will this setup work if so do I need another bios for the chipset?

As I said above, the fan for 55W processors only fits the frame for the W520.  The fan you listed is much smaller and won't provide as much cooling.  I would expect that you will run hot.  As far as the RAM, I have never used (or seen) that brand and cannot comment about compatibility.  Most brands work fine.

I don't know what applications you are running.  Many kinds of tasks (like many games) don't take advantage of the 4 cores in the quad processor and you will get very similar performance from a dual core CPU like an i7-2640m with a higher clock speed and lower power requirements.
