Fibocom L850-GL WWAN Problems on Multiple T480s Laptops

We have ~750 T480s (model 20L8S4HL00) laptops running Win10 Enterprise 1703 in our environment, and at least 35 of the laptops have non-functional Fibocom L850-GL WWAN modules. What makes matters worse is that this issue can also cause repeated BSoDs, sometimes multiple per day.

Problem Symptoms and Actions Taken

  • The "Intel(R) USB Flash Loader utility" / "Fibocom USB Flash Loader Utility" repeatedly connects and disconnects roughly once a minute, and when doing so the Windows "device unplugged" sound is heard. The HWID of this device is "USB\VID_8087&PID_07F5\5&1AD8E564&0&6". Refer to the screenshot below
  • The frequent and repeated hardware disconnections cause problems with the enterprise security software we use for encrypting external media, to the point that after a certain point the computer experiences a BSoD
  • The only associated driver that remains active in Device Manager is the "Intel(R) XMM7360-P WWAN", all other associated WWAN drivers show up as hidden with code 45 (disconnected)
  • If all WWAN drivers are uninstalled and the drivers are deleted, the only devices that are subsequently discovered are the flash loader utility and the Intel XMM7360, all of the others are no longer found and Windows cannot seem to find them again
  • Installing all of the latest device drivers and firmware using the Lenovo System Update tool do not mitigate this issue, nor does manually uninstalling/reinstalling the WWAN drivers
  • Temporarily disabling the built-in battery and disconnecting the AC and letting it sit for 5 minutes does not appear to change anything, nor does performing the same procedure combined with holding down the power button for 30 seconds
  • Temporarily disabling the WWAN module in the BIOS, booting into Windows, then enabling the WWAN module and booting into Widows also does not seem to have any effect
  • When this issue is occuring, the system will not transition into sleep mode. Disabling the WWAN module in the BIOS the system falls asleep without issue. This has not been confirmed as a symptom on all systems with the issue, but it is definitely the case on at least a couple.
  • On a system with the WWAN problem, the NVMe SSD was swapped out with one from a different T480s of the same model with the same driver set that does not have the problem, and the precise same issue started happening, including being unable to transition into sleep mode. When the NVMe SSD with the known good image was put back in its original chassis the problem went away and the drivers reappeared. Note that the built-in battery was disabled during this process and the system was rebooted several times.
  • The WWAN module from a bad T480s was pulled and put into a known good T480s, and the same issue occurred
  • This does not occur on all systems, and it's currently unknown why this happens
  • Note that several process monitor traces were captured, but nothing obvious was uncovered after analyzing them. If you would like copies of them please provide me with a Lenovo email address or secure Lenovo file transfer site and they will be sent over

Environment Info

  • All systems were imaged using the same Win10 Enterprise 1703 base image with the Lenovo SCCM driver set for Win10 1703, and the WWAN driver initially installed is nz3wj07w (0.9.4.89)
  • When the systems were imaged all BIOS settings and BIOS version (1.26) were the same
  • Not sure if this matters, but when the WWAN driver installed there's a chance that the SIM card was not inserted at that time
  • Note that these systems are part of a large enterprise and updating Windows to a more recent build is essentially not possible at this time

Temporary Mitigation

  • The BSoD can be mitigated in our case by uninstalling our external media encryption software, which is obviously less than ideal; however, note that the WWAN hardware still connects/disconnects repeatedly without said software installed
  • The BSoD and repeatedly disconnecting hardware can be mitigated entirely by disabling the WWAN module in the BIOS, which is also less than ideal because then those laptops are unable to utilize cellular data

Using Nirsoft USBLogView the connection/disconnection frequency can be seen below:

fibocom_disconnects.JPGFibocom Disconnect Frequency

What do you suggest to try next in an effort to correct this problem?

Any assistance with this is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

- Andy

Re: Fibocom L850-GL WWAN Problems on Multiple T480s Laptops

I have the exact same issue following the 2.0.1.44 driver update via Vantage System Update.  The only difference is the Description given by USBLogView.  Yours shows Fibocom USB Flash Loader, mine says Intel(R) USB Flash Loader.

Using system restore to go back before the update.  Attempts to manually install the driver are "successful" but does not restore WWAN functionality.  It is missing from windown.  Tech support is sending a new card.  Hopefully that helps.

Based on the data found in \Windows\Firmware\FwSwitchbin\SwitchDebugLog it would appear to be a firmware flash problem.
