I was using the fingerprint reader on my ThinkPad T440 to sign into my laptop using Windows Hello without any issues when all of the sudden it just stopped working. I checked device manager and it shows it as "Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request failed)", the full error is this:
Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)
A request for the USB device descriptor failed.
I tried installing the most recent driver from the Lenovo website - Validity Comon Driver version 4.5.507 - but there was no change even after a restart.
Then after doing a bit of research I tried installing the older driver - Lenovo Fingerprint Manager 4.5.122 - but that didn't work either even though the install was successful.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to revive the fingerprint reader or is it toast?

This can be closed, after about a week of not working it all the sudden started working again out of nowhere, makes me think it's most likely a loose hardware connection somewhere since I carry the laptop home in a backpack everyday.
