Hard Drive in ThinkPad 510

My ThinkPad came with 320 GB of Hard drive but Windows 7 shows 298 of total hard drive capacity. Any Ideas why is it so?

Hi perfumepad!

That's a great question. Most people don't notice that, but a few of our members have:

Re: Hard Drive in ThinkPad 510

Yeah, a "320GB" unfortunately means 320 * 1000 MB/GB * 1000 KB/MB * 1000 B/KB = 320,000,000,000 bytes.  Windows then does this math: 320000000000 bytes / 1024 B/KB / 1024 KB/MB / 1024 MB/GB = 298.0232238769531 "real" gigabytes.

The fault is with the drive manufacturers for ignoring the fact that computers are binary and count in powers of 2 and misrepresenting the capacity of their drives.

they are not ignoring the facts, but it is rather a unscrupluous way of ripping people off. This is like the shipping industry with the use of either weight or volume (which ever yields the maximum profit) to calculate how much they charge you.

Well, yeah.  I was being sarcastic about the ignoring part.
