I noticed the palm rest on my t500 had a crack in it, so I called tech support. (I have a 3 year warrenty and this is still my first year.)
Since it was not an accident, and not even in a high stress area, he said they would send me a replacemnt palm rest but I would need to send back my cracked one. I said no problem. (The crack is above my microphone jack that i havent even used before and runs up the top of the palm rest.)
Well, I got it today, and its not just a peice of plastic. It came with a track pad, with its buttons and wires and no instructions, although i think I found some on the website..
My quesiton is... like how long do I have to make the switch? This is not something i can do quickly as I am going to need to research this and make sure i have a few hours to get it done.
Also, what would happen if I decided to live with the crack a little longer and just put on the fixed one latter? Are they going to bill me for this fixed part or something after a set amount of time if they dont get my cracked one quickly?

Unlike in other laptops where you need to sweat yourself over even a simple palm replacement, thinkpad palmrest replacement is really easy. 5 minutes job of unscrewing couple of screws pop off the palm rest and connecting wire, then retrace the step to put in the new replacement palmrest.
i think usually you have one week to one month to send in the broken part, depends on what the service people have told you. One week in Australia is the standard period.
