Horizontal ghosting on brand new T450s LG Full HD Screen

[ Edited ]

Hi,

Last friday, I've received a brand new T450s laptop, but after using it a bit, I've discovered that the screen has a weird behavior. I'm nearly sure that the problem is hardware related...

Have you already seen this:

Link to image

(more pictures there:

https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B6TDb7DjOC5Xd2JJbDF3OVIzRDg&usp=sharing

)

Bad lines move when I move the windows so it's not a bad line or something like this. The more contrast there is on the whole line, the more the problem appears (you can see more samples with the picture causing problems in the link above).

Can I ask for a replacement, or reimbursement? I don't like the idea of this laptop, freshly out of the factory will be left in the hand of a brute repairman Smiley Happy.

Any advice will be welcome...

Regards,

Robin

Hi Vrobin,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

It is quite sad to hear that your new laptop having an issue. This kind of issue occurs on both hardware and software related. To confirm it, I request you to do some troubleshooting steps.

  • Boot the system into “Safe mode with networking” and check if you are facing same kind of issue.
  • Enter into BIOS mode and check.
  • Check updating the drivers from ThinkVantage system update utility.

Best regards,

Hemanth Kumar

Re: Horizontal ghosting on brand new T450s LG Full HD Screen

Hi Hemanth,

Thanks for the suggestions... to be honest, I doubted any of your suggestions  would help, but I tried anyway.

Booting in "safe mode" didn't solve the problem

Drivers were already updated (I installed all windows update packages and run all lenovo solution center updates which include a network driver update, but no graphics drivers AFAICT).

I didn't go into the BIOS because these lines appears in rather specific conditions (background has to be dark but not black, there must be a strong contrast -ideally white and black- windows on the left of the screen for the problem to be seen at its maximum).

Furthermore, following the suggestion of a technical support guy, I tried connecting the laptop to a real screen (through VGA because I don't have a display port cable at hand)... there is no problem with the external monitor/vga... this must be a TFT screen or cable defect :-/.

After contacting technical support, I'm about to get reimbursed (DOA procedure was accepted) and now, I wonder...

Is this a common problem? related to the first items of a new batch? I really like this laptop, it's the only computer I find fitting my taste (14" Full HD Display, external battery, dimm socket, room for a real hard drive). There is no real alternative, but I'm reluctant to buy another one now :-/

Hi Vrobin,

Thank you for the reply!

I am glad to hear you are getting DOA for your product, but I wanted to confirm the issue is related to hardware or software, because we have seen in some case Windows driver update may cause this kind of issue.

Best regards,

Hemanth Kumar

Re: Horizontal ghosting on brand new T450s LG Full HD Screen

On tuesday 21, commercial customer support from shop.lenovo.com (digitalriver it seems) told me that their technical support should soon send me a RMA number and a pre-paid label to send the parcel back.

Today is saturday 25, and I didn't receive anything... At best, I'll receive this RMA number monday, nearly a week just to get it. I'll have to wait for the parcel to arrive back at the vendor, than there is a week or so to wait before they check the laptop and accept to reimburse me (I still have to insiste to get a replacement instead of a reimbursement).

It seems that I won't have a working laptop before a month or so... I ordered it on april 6th... this will probably be nearly two months... what an horrible user experience! Could someone from lenovo support reading this message speed up the process a bit?

Thanks in advance,

Robin

I have this problem as well 10 days old and I just noticed it.  It needs special conditions.  The way I reproduce it is with dark Visual Studio and open windows explorer about 1/4 of the way from either vertical edge of the screen and the lines go right across.  There are many and they kind of jitter and it is progressively getting worse.   My secondary monitor has nothing.

Called service and they will replace DOA.

I like the laptop but I had a Thinkpad Yoga and that had ghosting which they replaced and it has been running well since.

It's a pity as I just got it at the state i like it to be with all my sotware...

There are neverending issues with LG.Display panels and various ghosting causes.

Does it go away after period of time or not ? It looks like bad hardware/voltage driver. Have you tried LCD tests http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/ ? The question is how many panels are affected by this.

Re: Horizontal ghosting on brand new T450s LG Full HD Screen

Only Lenovo could give figures about the number of faulty displays... maybe we're just both unlucky, but according to the very strange nature of the problem and the fact that you have the same behaviour let me think that this problem is not that uncommon.

It seems rather sure that it is a hardware problem... it could be a voltage problem as suggested by puppy or bad contact in the cable from the motherboard to the lcd panel, or anything else, I'm not skilled enough in electronics to draw any conclusion about the real origin of the problem.

One of the bad thing with this problem is that it's not easily noticed at first sight. It really depends upon the image displayed and can easily remain unnoticed. In my case, opening the windows 8.1 task manager with a dark colored background was the must obvious way to see the problem.

Strangely, the bios lcd diagnostic tool with a lot of different patterned images wasn't the best way to see it (in fact, I did notice the problem with this tool because I knew how it looked liked, I'm not sure I could have ssen it otherwise).

Anyway, it took me more than a month and a couple of calls to the technical support, but at last, I bought a new T450s which wasn't faulty and I was reimbursed of the first one, returned with a DOA procedure.

Re: Horizontal ghosting on brand new T450s LG Full HD Screen

I have this exact same problem for months now. I was not able to contact support because I need this machine and do not have time to send it back etc.

I tried Windows 8-10, Apricity, Debian and also checked the BIOS screen and the problem is hard to notice sometimes but it is there. It is not OS related, tried updating display and VGA drivers, BIOS, etc. and still the same. I still haven't noticed this on an external display.

My display is an AUO B140HAN01.3 by the way, so I think this is not about the panel either. My guess is there is a problem with the cable or the connection. Anyone solved this yet?
