How to install XP on a T520

2013-01-13, 16:11 PM
Hi, I need to install xp on my T520 4242-R46.
I have installed a clean new 500gb hd.
I have a XP with SP2.
I have loaded default bios setup.
Doing installation I get a blue sceen telling,
That there is a problem and windows is closed.

Do I need XP with SP3 or is there something I have to
turn on or off in the bios.

Thanks
Sebastian

Hello and welcome,

The first thing to try is to go to BIOS and set the SATA mode to "compatibility".  XP lacks the AHCI drivers.

If that gets the install to work, you can run that way or go back and slipstream the Intel AHCI driver into an install ISO using something like nLite.  You could slipstream SP3 into the ISO, or start with an SP3 CD.

If your drive is advanced format (4k-byte sectors) you will probably have performance issues unless you run a partition alignment tool.  This describes the issue and the available Seagate tool: http://knowledge.seagate.com/articles/en_US/FAQ/221411en

Change the BIOS sata controller setting from AHCI to Compatibility.

Otherwise you are going to need to install the Intel SATA drivers during setup with a floppy disk.

This helped me too

@ThorsHammer,

I've had zero luck using the XP F6 driver add option with a USB floppy drive.  Has that worked for you?

I haven't actually tried it in years.  I am going to run some dual boot experiments on a T430s so maybe I'll see if it still works.

Thanks a lot, the sata combability mode in bios did
the trick.
The hole process was very smooth.
I hope the driver install will run as smooth.

I downloaded the x86 floppy image from the Intel download center. I unpacked the zip and dropped the files to a 3.5" floppy.

I connected the external USB floppy drive to a T430s (usb 2.0 port) and booted from the Windows XP x86 SP1 DVD.  I of course pressed F6 to notify XP setup I have a disk.  Later when prompted I pressed "S" to get setup to read the floppy and provide a list of possible drivers.

I selected "Intel(R) 7 Series Chipset Family SATA AHCI Controller" and that worked. It is currently using the iaStor driver to do a full format of the 7mm Seagate disk in the T430s.

After the format is complete, I assume setup will continue without issue.  I'll report back later if it blows up.  I do not intend to go much further down this path.  There will be all kind of challenges I have no desire to solve (like Optimus video).

I wonder if this MS KB explains why it works for you but not me: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/916196

I have the SmartDisk (Mitsumi) which is the first drive in the list.

Windows XP installed completely on my T430s.  Someone would need to resolve the networking, video, and other driver issues.

I am moving on to some dual boot, and boot from VHD testing.

Thanks 'hammer,

It's been a bit of a thread hijacking, but maybe will help someone else.

Regards,

Z.
