How to install windows on the new SSD

2012-08-27, 5:24 AM

I am planning to buy a SDD.

However, how can I use my Windows Product ID for installing a new system on the SSD;

Is there any recommendations for this situation. I want to keep all lenovo functions in the new SSD.

BTW, it is T420.

THX!

hi.

did you make the Lenovo recovery dvd set from your original factory windows installation?

if so, then:

- simply swap out the platter drive for the new, blank ssd.

- make sure that your optical drive is listed first in your bios boot order.

- boot disk #1 of the recovery disk set and follow the prompts.

- in short order you'll have the ssd set up with "all lenovo functions" as you've described you wish.

- you won't need the Windows key from the sticker on the bottom of your machine.

if you didn't make the set, then it'll take more work. once you've installed Windows on the ssd, you'll need to get Thinkvantage System Update from the driver matrix here: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/research/hints-or-tips/detail.page?&LegacyDocID=MIGR-77167 and install it. you'll be able to update hardware drivers and Thinkvantage apps from it. once you've completed that, you can double check the matrix to catch anything newer than offered by TVSU.

hth a bit.

Re: How to install windows on the new SSD

IFor my new T530,  bought a Corsair 240 GB SSD with an "upgrade kit" for US $10 more than for the drive alone.  The kit came with software and a USB cable that connected to both the data and power plugs of the SSD.  The software was reasonably easy to use and transferred over all the partitions on the original hard drive that came with the T530.

I took this path because the SSD upgrade from Lenovo was way more expensive than the replacement SSD. So I bought an external drive case for the original hard drive, and now I have another external hard drive for backup, etc.

It just worked.  Recommended.

This helped me too

Yeah, second philburton's suggestion. I did this too and it worked perfectly. You effectively just "clone" your existing HDD to the SDD. Which means when you swap the drives, you get exactly the same state as when you last used it.

You can do a back-up from Win7's or Lenovo's utility but the above method is almost too quick and easy to be true.

If you have USB-SATA cable with your new SSD you can use softwares like Apricorn's

EZ Gig IV Cloning Software

to clone your hard drive instead of fresh clean OS installation...

Watch youtube video to know how to do that..

T420s 4170-CTO : i5 2520M, 6GB RAM, 320GB HDD(7200rpm).

The Corsair disk cloning software was from Apricorn.  Easy to use, worth the $10.

If your existing HDD is from Seagate or Western Digital you can use their special versions of Acronis True Image. You can download the software for free from their site. To work it requires that at least one HDD/SDD that's attached to your notebook is theirs It doesn't necessarily have to be either the source or target drive of the imaging operation. It can even be a USB-attached older drive that you're using essentially as a dongle.
