How to use an external microphone? (T510)

2010-09-29, 18:32 PM

Hi, I current have a Lenovo T510 Laptop and I'm trying to figure out how to plug in my external microphone into a headphone jack. On my old computers they would have 2 separate jacks. A pink one for the microphone and a green one for the headphones. Well, on the side of the laptop, all that's there is a gray-colored jack with a headSET symbol above it. At first, I assumed that it would work interchangeably with the headphones part and the microphone part, but only the headphones work when I plug it in.

So here are the questions I've got pertaining to my issue:

1. What exactly does that Headset symbol mean? (I can't find images of it online, but i can take a picture if necessary)

2. Is there a way that I can plug in my microphone without purchasing any sort of dual jack of some kind that works for both headphones and microphone?

3. If I do have to purchase something, what exactly would it have to be and what would be the estimated cost?

If there is any other helpful information that anyone has about my problem, I would love to hear.

Thanks in advance!

~Michael

Alright, thanks for your reply! It got me searching for a possible adapter, and I found this:

http://www.amazon.com/Headset-Buddy-Smartphone-Computer-Blackberry/dp/B002SK66OY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1286059173&sr=8-1

It looks like what I should be looking for, but I would rather have it confirmed rather than buying something that I wouldn't be using.

It will likely work as suggested by bananaman and Spearoid in the above thread.

Also recommended  by W510 user on Amazon:-

"Works on my Lenovo Laptop!

I have a Plantronics headset that has two plugs, one for headphones and one for microphone. My Lenovo thinkpad W510 has a jack that supports headphones with microphone. This adapter plugs into that fancy jack, and my headphone plugs connect to the adapter, resulting in a usable headset without having to use the USB adapter that came with the headset, that lacks linux drivers. The only improvement that I can think of is a 90-degree plug, so the wire isn't in the way of my mouse on the right side of the computer."

Hope it helps.

I have bought this exact product. However the laptop is still not recognizing my mic. What should I do in this case?

Welcome to our peer-to-peer support community, Fronk.

Try the following steps:

Connect your microphone to the external output jack on the side of your laptop. Power on your laptop and open Control Panel.

Check that you have the right driver device for your microphone.

In Control Panel click on the type of external microphone you have.

If it is not recognized, click on "Default Microphone" and highlight "External Microphone."

Hope the above helps and do post back your results to let us know if this workaround... worked.

Cheers,

serene

Re: How to use an external microphone? (T510)

I have Lenovo Thinkpad x230, with the same audio chipset (Realtek HD Audio) same 4-pin audiojack and the same troubles with external microphone.

Realtek (or may be lenovo) autodetector detects electrodynamical microphone easily and for sure.

But if your external microphone is piesoelectric, or has any additional schemes, such as amplifiers or filters - it may fail to be detected. Thus, you will have no sound from any microphone - internal turns off, when you connect 4-pin audiojack, and external (if any) is not detected, until it has at least less than 1 megaohm of active impendance.

Full size scheme

Solution is on the picture above.

Russian "Наушники" is a headphones, "В ноутбук" - "to the notebook", and "Микрофон" is a microphone.

Resistor should be from 50 to 500 kiloohms.

I used 47 kiloohms, and now my Sennheiser PC 350 works good with x230.

Main issue of this case - usual headset splitter, bought on ebay or any local store has no such resistor. So, you have to get a soldering iron and install resistor into splitter, or make splitter yourself, or... buy electrodynamical microphone or headset, which is reported working by another users.

iPhone headset, for example, works with x230 for sure - it's mic has 600 kOhm impendance.

The Laptop I use is a Lenovo Ideapad (dont know what model) and the headphones I'm trying to use is a Logitech h390. There is only a usb plugin, and neither the mic nor the headphones work. what can I do to make both the mic and the headphones work? (I pressed all the buttons on the chord, so I dont know what to do.)
