IRQL_not_Less_Or_Equal T400

We're getting a very strange problem on any T400 we try something on. Alot of our users have 3G dongles that they use. The dongle in question is an E170 HSPA model.

When we insert the BT dongle to the machine, a piece of software installs itself which is needed for the dongle to work, called BT Access manager. The installation works fine. Now, after installation the software boots up and at the point of connection we get this issue on BSOD.

"A problem has been detected and is shutting down your computer to prevent further damage"

IRQL_Not_Less_Or_Equal

(Further down the page):

Technical Information:

***Stop: 0x000000A (0x00453041, 0x00000016, 0x00000000, 0x804F8A68)'

I have done the following in no particular order.

  • Defrag on C:
  • System Restore to three seperate points
  • Lenovo Restore and Recovery
  • Complete reinstallation of Windows XP SP3 and completely up to date patches and updates.
  • Every driver in existence for the BT dongle
  • Changed drivers for the internal network card. (new and old)
  • Changed drivers for the wireless adapter (New and old)

I am currently doing an SFC check as a last resort. I have spoken to BT about the issue to see if it's something they're aware of, however this is the first instance they've heard of. I have also logged a call with Lenovo however they're being particularly useless on a number of calls so I've given in on that.

I have installed this on a number of others laptops, namelt HP's and Dells with no errors or issues at all.

Does anyone have any advice at all about this as we're currently upgrading all of our users to these T400's and the majority of them will be using these dongles.

Many thanks in advance

Re: IRQL_not_Less_Or_Equal T400

SFC didn't help in the slightest. Though I did get a different BSOD upon inserting the BT dongle

*** STOP: 0x0000008E (0xc0000005, 0x8054b71c, 0xa021250c, 0x00000000)

Beginning physical dump of memory

Physical memory dump complete

Contact your system administrator or technical support for further assistance.

Now, as far as I'm aware a STOP error beginning with 0x0000008E could  be just about anything. I doubt it's a RAM issue as we've replicated the same problem on four other machines with exactly the same build.

I don't see how it would be a registry problem when again we've replicated the problem. Now, it could be a driver issue however I've tried every which way with drivers with no success.

I know for a fact it's not a virus issue which this STOP error can point to.

I'm actually stuck now, so any help would be greatly appricated.

Many thanks

Re: IRQL_not_Less_Or_Equal T400

I'm assuming you've tried the basics here, but just in case make sure:

1. You're running the latest service pack/essential updates.

2. You have the latest driver versions for your 3G dongle and that they are the correct version for the installed OS.

3. You've tried a different dongle (same type is fine, just not the exact same one, make sure it's not an issue with that particular dongle).

That out of the way, I could use a bit more information.

1. How many T400 systems have you tried this on?

2. Were those systems in a factory-install state when you tried it?

2a. If not, are you able to try the dongle on one in a factory-install state?

3. Is it always the same error across the different T400s?

3b. If not, please post 2 or 3 so I can see the differences.

4. Does the error message always change when you run SFC?

Also, if you could provide the memory dumps and error logs for the systems on which this is occuring it would be a great help.

2. You have the latest driver versions for your 3G dongle and that they are the correct version for the installed OS - I have tried all the Win2k and XP drivers for this dongle yes.

That out of the way, I could use a bit more information.

1. How many T400 systems have you tried this on? - We have seen this problem on 4 machines.

2. Where those systems in a factory-install state when you tried it? - I have the same issue when on factory install state, with Windows XP SP3 w/ updates, and with our own image.

2a. If not, are you able to try the dongle on one in a factory-install state? - Have tried this in configured and unconfigured with the same error.

3. Is it always the same error across the different T400s? - Exactly the same error yes.

3b. If not, please post 2 or 3 so I can see the differences.

4. Does the error message always change when you run SFC? - No, the errors now seem to be sporadic as to which one we get. Either I am now getting the initial IRQL error or I am getting the second STOP error.

Also, if you could provide the memory dumps and error logs for the systems on which this is occuring it would be a great help.

It took me a while as Windows Debugging Tool was being typically troublesome for me.

Re: IRQL_not_Less_Or_Equal T400

Well, the issue is definitely being caused by the execution of the BT Connection Manager, specifically the process "btomosrv.exe". But you knew that.

I hate it to say it, but it's sounding to me like there's an issue with the T500 firmware and this particular driver, which, seeing as the driver works on other laptops leaves the blame with the T500.

First try updating the BIOS to the latest version, the required utility, updates and instructions can be found here:

BIOS UPDATE UTILITY: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-70353.html

If that doesn't work or you're already at the latest version check the BIOS (unfortunitely I can't give you an specifics here, my system won't be arriving for some time) for any options concerning USB (USB, USB Legacy Support, USB 2.0 Support, etc. etc.) and try them in various combinations. What we're looking for specifically is 1.1 vs 2.0 support, but depending on the options available there may be more relevant ones. If you list the available options here I may be able to provide more detail.

Give that a shot and let me know how it goes.

Re: IRQL_not_Less_Or_Equal T400

Hi there,

I was having a similar issue with BT Access Manager- the software would appear to install ok, but the machine would blue-screen everytime I tried to start the software.

I submitted a ticket with IBM, who basically told me to eff off as they won't support any third party stuff and BT, well you know what they're like......!

I thought I'd let you know that in the end I gave up with Access Manager and  I now have the WWAN connection working via the built in WWAN modem, using the Lenovo Access Connections software (I don't know why I didn't just try this before)! I assumed that it wasn't possible to modify connection settings and the card was bound to whatever service provider (Vodafone in our case), but I was able to add a new profile and put the settings in et voila!

What you basically need to do is edit the WWAN details (in the Advanced view in Access Connections) and put in the APN, username and password. These details for BT are as follows:

APN: btmobile.bt.com

User: user

Password: btmms

At first it appeared you can only use a pre-defined service provider from the drop down list, but it will allow you to put in a custom name, you just need to select the 'custom' box.

Hope this helps!

Re: IRQL_not_Less_Or_Equal T400

Fixed. In the end this was down to a driver issue which we here have had to rewrite. A driver within the dongles software conflicts with Access Manager (even when Access Manager is not running, oh yes!)

If you have the same issue, then I am more than happy to get the driver sent to you. Please PM me if you require it.

Many thanks

Hi, can you reply with more details about the driver issue?  I'm having the same problems with HP laptops that have deployed OS's

Thanks

Re: , Re: IRQL_not_Less_Or_Equal T400

The driver in question is btomonwi.dll which sits in the Common Files area. It would seem as though it is conflicting with one of the wireless devices and causing the BSOD. When we've changed the driver, now on about a dozen machines, the problem does not occur.

Hi Bravosix,

Can you forward me a copy of the modified btomonwi.dll ?  We're having the same issue with HP machines after deployment.  Im surprised BT haven't released a proper fix for this yet.

Thanks again
