Info on secondary or backup battery? T430u

The Lenovo "Solutions center" displays a battery alert saying my main battery is OK but that the "secondary battery" health is "not available" and that "a communication problem has occurred".  My main battery charges OK but I am not sure what to do about this info regarding the secondary battery. To be honest, I did not even know there was such a thing.  My T430u manual describes how to change the "backup battery" but there is no other information.  Should I be concerned?

The same notification appears in my thinkpad.

Any ideas on if this is a bug which will be resolved by an update or a hardware issue?

Thanks,

Re: Info on secondary or backup battery? T430u

Hi hillman,

Are you using once of the slice batteries?

If you paired your unit wth one of the multi-cell slice batteries then you have a main battery and the slice battery is your secondary battery.

Could this be referring to the small button-like batteries usually installed on motherboards to keep the clock and other small bits alive when the computer is otherwise turned off?

Re: Info on secondary or backup battery? T430u

Thanks.  My battery is a large flat configuration that I believe is called a slice battery, but I do not understand what you mean by "pairing my unit with a multi-cell slice battery".  There is just the one large flat battery as far as I can see (held in place by about 5 screws and accessed from the bottom of the laptop). Two conflicting previous replies leave me still confused (one says there is no secondary and the other says there is).  Hmmm ...still wondering.

Re: Info on secondary or backup battery? T430u

I apologize for the confusion.

The slice battery has many cells in it that help it function more effieciently.

I said 'pair it' meaning you're using it together because the T430u comes with its own battery.

As far as the secondary battery statement, the computer should recognize the cpu's built-in battery and the slice battery as one unit.

Have you tried a power reset...?

Did you installed any drivers or software prior to getting that message?

Is the AC adapter plugged in or are you running off bettery power when the message appears?

Re: Info on secondary or backup battery? T430u

I got the warning message about the sec battery whether on AC or battery. I got one message saying I needed to install the Lenovo Dependency Package so I did, even though I had installed that previously. Still had same error messages. Did some more reading and installed Lenovo Power Manager for W8 (file 7xua06ww.exe).  After one hung install it installed on 2nd try. Following this the warning message went away and the Lenovo Solutions Ctr NO LONGER warned me about any secondary battery, telling me only that THE battery was good.  I think I am OK now and must conclude there is only one battery. I do wonder why the Power Mgr was not preinstalled if it is needed, but will not worry about that further.  Thank you for the support and advice.
