Is it possible to bring USB 3.0 to T520?

Hi all.

I have ThinkPad T520, and I wanted a USB 3.0 port. I found out that there is a dock station 4338-35 which has one. I was naive enough to believe that the docking station has its own USB 3.0 controller, so I've bought it.

So yep, now I have lots of USB 2.0 ports, and no USB 3.0 port, because my laptop doesn't have USB 3.0 controller. Awful sad. How naive.

Let me be a bit more naive and ask: is it possible to upgrade T520 somehow, and get USB 3.0 controller on it? Or, is USB controller built into the chipset so it's not possible?

Thanks.

Re: Is it possible to bring USB 3.0 to T520?

I have never used one and have never bought anything from the seller, but this is cheap and I expect it would work:

Thanks, I'll give it a try! I was thinking about upgrading some laptop internals, but your solution is obviously much easier and cheaper.

Re: Is it possible to bring USB 3.0 to T520?

I was thinking of adding the same thing if possible. I don't recall now if the T520 has that slot but having bought USB 3.0 keys & external drive for my Z70-80. I was wondering if I could use them in high speed mode. I still prefer having eSATA but one wasn't put onto the Z70.

If you prefer eSATA, there are also ExpressCard eSATA ports, but you need a separate cable for power

Re: Is it possible to bring USB 3.0 to T520?

The T520 has eSATA or at least my build does. I would have liked it on my new notebook, the Z70-80 I did backups on two computers yesterday with the same software. The eSATA was faster transferring than the USB 3.0 connected drive. It was also a 3GB connection in that older system.

Back the Expresscard I have looked at serveral using the NEC chipset and wondered if they are Windows 10 compatible (drivers wise). No is the answer which kills that unless there is a chipset natively support this solution (Expresscard) in Windows 10. See quote from eBayer.

tripplec, thanks for sharing.

Well, the fact that this piece of hardware does not work in Windows 10 sounds quite discouraging, although not particularly bad for me because I use Linux. Let's see if it works there! I'll write about that once I receive one and try it.

Re: Is it possible to bring USB 3.0 to T520?

Yeah, many out there but NEC is the most common chipset in 34mm Express slot. NEC UPD720202 chipset.

No sure what some of the others are using. Compatibility is not indicated by the majority and without driver support its not making it viable. Maybe there is one out there that will work.

Re: Is it possible to bring USB 3.0 to T520?

Finally, received this one today http://www.ebay.com/itm/USB-3-0-Dual-2-Port-Adapter-Express-Card-Expresscard-to-34mm-64mm-Slot-Lapto...

In Linux Mint 17.3, works flawlessly! I tested my USB 3.0 usb stick with it, and it shows read speed slightly more than 100 MB/sec.

Fits in the expresscard slot perfectly, looks like 2 built-in USB ports.

richk, thanks again, great suggestion!
