Is it possible to replace the button-less touchpad of a T440s with the 3-button touchpad of a T450s?

2015-01-05, 11:00 AM

Apparently Lenovo reintroduced phyiscal buttons for their touchpads for many models during this year's CES:

http://www.engadget.com/2015/01/04/lenovo-thinkpad-x1-carbon-2015/

Unfortunately, I already have a T440s without physical buttons. I got the laptop because all its other properties fit my use case perfectly. The missing buttons are just the one most annoying thing about this laptop.

So what I'd like to do, is to be able to replace the button-less touchpad of my T440s with the 3-button touchpad of a T450s (should be possible to get one via ebay once they start selling).

The questions are:

  • are the physical dimensions of the old and new touchpad the same?
  • is the electronic connector of the old and new touchpad the same?

Hi. I found this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/THINKPAD-T440-T440P-T440S-T450-T450S-Touchpad-Clickpad-With-Left-and-Right-keys-/251805759114?roken=cUgayN&soutkn=GSHiL8

but I am not sure how reliable it is and if it really means, there is a compatibility.

Wow - i really hope this listing is true. It could spare me a new T450S or X1 :D

I'll have to try this on my T440s!!

If you're willing to take a risk and shed those 50 usd, let us then know if
it works flawlessly, I'll be more than happy to buy it too :)

Keep us apprised of how this turns out. I think Lenovo would be doing themselves a real disfavor to anyone who bought the unified clickpad generation if the new part wasn't backwards compatible.

This... I can't even describe how excited I am.

I don't even care if it's not the right dimensions, I'll chop it up and smoosh it in. I am worried about quality though... is this going to just make the touchpad crap? Does it even support multiple touch points?

Is anyone else ordering this? I'm going to check with Lenovo about whether they'd have the part, but if not I might just get this ebay one, seller does have 98.2% positive feedback.

Pleeeease update this thread if you've bought one!

So lenovo didn't get back to me about it(surprise!)

I ordered it from the link above and it ended up being $73 USD and the estimated delivery is: Wed, Feb 25 - Mon, Mar 16

Will update when it's here!

Ordered one for a T440S and one for X240. they just arrived. Sizewise they both look like a perfect match. Later tonight i'll try to put them in. It seems to involve splitting the machines almost to atoms, but hey :D

On another note, the touchpads are not like the previous, as you can't push down on the whole pad anymore, Its hinged in the top, and i guess the physical "click function" is now only used to replicate buttons at the bottom.

This means less stress on the fingers and hopefully less noise!

regards,

James

If possible, please post the dimensions of both and show a picture of the bottoms.

Re: Is it possible to replace the button-less touchpad of a T440s with the 3-button touchpad of a T4

Succes!!

Popped right into the T440s, and worked right away with the current driver. The thinkpad special tab in mouse properties even shows a touchpad with buttons and special options for that now.

This is so sweet. My T440s went from an annoying machine just waiting for an upgrade to a T450S or X1 carbon, to an almost perfect machine..

For the procedure itself, a lot of the stuff specified in the HMM as needed to be removed, was really needed. Only things i had to disassemble was HDD, Batteries, Fan assembly, wires for the speakers and fingerprint reader. Then the systemboard could be loosend and angled up so the touchpads could be exchanged. I took off the keboard, but now i can't really see why that was needed.

Next up, the X240

Final result:

I would love to do the conversion but, unfortunately, I am 'mechanically challenged'! It could be a very costly exercise on my part. :(

Regarding the comments on the disassembly, the instructions in the manual are for removing the keyboard bezel, not exposing the touchpad from below so it could be swapped while the bezel and keyboard were still in place. You couldn't take out the keyboard bezel without removing the keyboard. A lot of interest in the touchpad swap comes from owners of the 15.6" machines - T540/W540. That process should be MUCH easier. You remove the battery, the door on the bottom and the keyboard. The keyboard bezel can then be removed. I always caution about replacing parts that are not considered customer-replaceable on machines that are under warranty

Yes i got it from the EBay link above.

A small update re. the driver. My T440S had version 18.0.7.57 of the synaptics driver. A quick system update installed a never version .100 that did not work with the buttons. I also tried an even newer X1 driver. That did also no work. So back to the working version... no big problem!

18.0.7.57 with this synaptics driver everything works? Two finger scroll? Middle track point scroll? Everything?

Nice work :)  Do the new buttons sit low enough that they won't scuff the screen when closed?

I've just bought one on ebay for my T440s. I love thinkpads but cannot get used to this button-less touchpad/trackpoint.
