Is it possible to replace the button-less touchpad of a T440s with the 3-button touchpad of a T450s?

Apparently Lenovo reintroduced phyiscal buttons for their touchpads for many models during this year's CES:

http://www.engadget.com/2015/01/04/lenovo-thinkpad-x1-carbon-2015/

Unfortunately, I already have a T440s without physical buttons. I got the laptop because all its other properties fit my use case perfectly. The missing buttons are just the one most annoying thing about this laptop.

So what I'd like to do, is to be able to replace the button-less touchpad of my T440s with the 3-button touchpad of a T450s (should be possible to get one via ebay once they start selling).

The questions are:

  • are the physical dimensions of the old and new touchpad the same?
  • is the electronic connector of the old and new touchpad the same?

Re: Is it possible to replace the button-less touchpad of a T440s with the 3-button touchpad of a T4

Hi. I found this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/THINKPAD-T440-T440P-T440S-T450-T450S-Touchpad-Clickpad-With-Left-and-Right-k...

but I am not sure how reliable it is and if it really means, there is a compatibility.

Keep us apprised of how this turns out. I think Lenovo would be doing themselves a real disfavor to anyone who bought the unified clickpad generation if the new part wasn't backwards compatible.

Re: Is it possible to replace the button-less touchpad of a T440s with the 3-button touchpad of a T4

This... I can't even describe how excited I am.

I don't even care if it's not the right dimensions, I'll chop it up and smoosh it in. I am worried about quality though... is this going to just make the touchpad crap? Does it even support multiple touch points?

Is anyone else ordering this? I'm going to check with Lenovo about whether they'd have the part, but if not I might just get this ebay one, seller does have 98.2% positive feedback.

Pleeeease update this thread if you've bought one!

So lenovo didn't get back to me about it(surprise!)

I ordered it from the link above and it ended up being $73 USD and the estimated delivery is: Wed, Feb 25 - Mon, Mar 16

Will update when it's here!

Ordered one for a T440S and one for X240. they just arrived. Sizewise they both look like a perfect match. Later tonight i'll try to put them in. It seems to involve splitting the machines almost to atoms, but hey Smiley Very Happy

On another note, the touchpads are not like the previous, as you can't push down on the whole pad anymore, Its hinged in the top, and i guess the physical "click function" is now only used to replicate buttons at the bottom.

This means less stress on the fingers and hopefully less noise!

If possible, please post the dimensions of both and show a picture of the bottoms.
