Issue Upgrading T440p Processor & RAM

2016-04-18, 0:04 AM

I am having an issue upgrading the proc and RAM in my Lenovo t440p (20ANS04504) notebook. I have done the following:

1. Removed power cord
2. Removed battery
3. Discharged static and wore an anti-static wristband
4. Held the power button down for 30 seconds
5. Removed the fan/unlocked the processor unit
6. Removed the original processor unit
7. Installed the new processor unit
8. Locked the processor unit
9. Screwed the fan back in
10. Powered the notebook up

When I power up, the power button remains lit (green) for 5 seconds then powers off. There is no error code nor a prompt for ThinkPad setup. When a swap the old processor back, I am able to boot. I've also done this same process when adding RAM. I get the same issue. I did research and received confirmation from forums, vendor and Lenovo FRU guides that I ordered the correct parts. The fact that this issue occurs when I swap either the RAM or processor leads me to believe that there may be a internal setting that I need to modify.

Here are details of each part

New RAM:
MT16KTF1G64HZ-1G6E1
8GB 2RX8 PC3L-12800S-11-11-FP
DPAE6RW011

Old RAM:
MT16KTF1G64HZ-1G6E1
8GB 2RX8 PC3L-12800S-11-11-FP
DPAE2CE013

New Processor:
Intel Core i7 Processor
i7-4900MQ, 2.8GHz, 8MB Cache
Product Code: BX80647I74900MQ
S-spec: SR15K
S/N: 2W305002A1436
Batch: J307A421

Old Processor:
Code on actual part: 11S0C62669ZVJ8CC46H0MW
FRU: 04X4051

Notebook:

Lenovo t440p (20ANS04504)

I've tried modifying the ThinkPas Setup config to to the following:

Security->
Security Chip [Disabled]
Physical Presence for Provisioning [Disabled]
Physical Presence for Clear [Enabled]

Config->Power->
Intel SpeedStep technology [Enabled]
Mode for AC [Maximum Perf]
Mode for Battery [Battery Opti]
Adaptive Thermal Management
Scheme for AC [Maximum Perf]
Scheme for Battery [Blanaced]
Optical Drive Speed [Normal]
CPU Power Management [Disabled]
Power On with AC Attach [Disabled]
Intel Rapid Start Technology [Enabled]
Entry after [3 hours]

Please let me know if there's anything else I should try or if any more info is needed. Thanks!

The product code is correct for an I7 but the FRU appears to be for an I5. Are you sure of these numbers?

Re: Issue Upgrading T440p Processor & RAM

I recently acquired a T440p with an i5-4200M and have upgraded RAM, LCD, touchpad and replaced the spinning HD with an SSD. I'm intigued by this post as I wanted to upgrade the CPU to an i7.

I had no issues putting in GSKill RAM 2x 8GB CLS 9. It booted up just fine.

However after I upgraded the touchpad and LCD upon re-assembly, my t440p did the same as you describe. Nothing on the screen showed up and no beeps. What I did was remove the RAM and then booted it up. I got a bunch of beeps. This confirmed the BIOS was working. I then attached an external monitor to the VGA port and booted it up. That seemed to have woken up something and the LCD came to life, again with beeps. I then installed the RAM and all was fine.

Today I started using my T440p as my daily driver, which means I use it all day long. I don't want to derail this thread but my T440p gets offly hot and the fan comes on often and is quite loud, coming from my silent and cool W500 it's annoying. CPU temp on the i5 is 55C. The underside where the CPU is located is very warm and after a day of use, the left side of the keyboard and palmrest is uncomfortably warm - I'm not liking this.

I know about TPFanControl - it helps with preventing the fan coming on so often but it then gets warmer.

I reapplied artic silver 3 thermal paste but doesn't make a difference. CPU temp was 53C before and after at idle. The machine is idle much of the time. I'm running clean install of Win10 with no Lenovo software aside from some drivers.

What version is your BIOS?  UEFI: 2.25 / ECP: 1.08 description says "updated CPU microcode.  Are you at least that up-to-date?

I apologize.  The following info was on the original i5 CPU.  The new i7 CPU didn't have a FRU listed on it. I've also updated the original post.

Code on i5 CPU: 11S0C62669ZVJ8CC46H0MW
FRU: 04X4051

Unfortunately got nowhere.  I even took it into a local store and was able to get the RAM to upgrade, but not the i7.  I've resorted to trying to find somewhere that will install a new proc if I purchase the proc thorugh them.  I'll update if successful or if anyone else has any ideas.
