LENOVO THINKPAD T460P-i5 high hard disk utilization

We recently purchased LENOVO THINKPAD T460P-i5 and all of them are having high hard disk utlization straight out of box. We upgraded drivers, BIOS, installed latest Windows 10 updates but problem persists. We even formatted and installed Windows 10 Pro 64bit but same issue. 


Laptop Specification:


Lenovo ThinkPad T460p, 6th Generation Intel Core i5-6300HQ Processors,

8GB Ram DDR3, 1TB 5400rpm,

Nvidia GT-940M 2 GB, 14.1FHD WWAN,

Intel 8260AC+BT 2x2, WWAN upgradable, Y-SCR, Y-FPR, Y-TPM,

Low-Light 720p HD Camera with Face Tracking,

Battery 6 Cell (5.2 Ah) (57+), , 135W_3PIN_UK, KYB BackLit,

Ms Windows 10 Pro 64 Bit, 3 Years Warranty


Please advise solution to this issue.

Hi Irshad,

1. Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Check that the power plan is either Balanced or High Performance.

2. You may enable disk caching to improve hard disk performance. Refer to this link for more information.
*Also, turn off Windows write-cache buffer flushing on the device. Do not worry as the laptop has battery as spare power supply.

3. It could be due to the preinstalled McAfee VirusScan doing a background scan, causing high utilization on the hard disk drive. You may go to Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) > Processes tab > to see which processes used the disk utilization.
*If you did not paid for the McAfee, it could be preinstalled as trial. You could uninstall it and use Windows Defender. Different antimalware solutions may have different level of performance impact on the hard disk drive.

4. Under Task Manager > Startup tabs > Right-click and disable all (Except Lenovo Services).
