LTE WWAN Modules for T430 with Windows 10

Hi again,

I got mobile broadband to work on my T430 just hours ago only to discover that it is rather slow. I will now need a LTE/4G compatible WWAN module, which are unfortunately not whitelisted. I understand that I will need to change the PID of the new module, by plugging it in while the laptop is in sleep mode but it appears that the process is different for each module.

I found two compatible modules on eBay that ship from the UK within my budget (£30): MC8805 and MC7710. How do I choose?

Thanks!

Hi

Maximum download speed of mc8355 is 14. mbps, so your decision to replace it with LTE modem was awaited.

That's not right. Siarre's mc7700/10/50 wwan modems are approved and whitelisted in T430. But the modem by your 2nd link will not be accepted by T430' BIOS because of it's Sierra generic modem, not Lenovo branded, so, has the IDs not whitelisted. MC7710 for Lenovo laptop should have FRU 04W3821, but it usually is more expensive than generic one. Though, generic modem will either works after some efforts in regards to its vid/pid you mentioned.

mc8805 is 3g modem with maximum download speed 42 mbps, depending on the cellular operator network infrastructure. Of course, it's not whitelisted.

Re: LTE WWAN Modules for T430 with Windows 10

Thanks, I actually have a measly 2-3 Mbps on HSPA so I'm now leaning towards the LTE MC7710.

I found that the VID/PIDs are:

1199:68a2 - MC7710 in QMI mode
1199:68a3 - MC7710 in DirectIP mode.

Since you said that this is a generic version, would it be in DIP mode at 1199:68a3 or can I expect it to be set to some other random values? Would I need to change it to QMI at 1199:68a2 or to my current MC8355's settings at 1199:9013?

Re: LTE WWAN Modules for T430 with Windows 10

In general, you're right. WL'ed PID is 68a2, but VID might be 1199 or 114f, depending on the BIOS version in your laptop and your plans to update it. I haven't check out current T430' BIOS version and its wl.

There are two ways to switch the mode from DirectIP to QMI (Lenovo supported) - by Sierra' provided special tool or by AT commands. Both ways need the modem drivers for DIP mode installed, the ones on Lenovo site are for QMI mode only.
Get the modem, insert it into the powered off laptop, get the IDs from 1802 error string if it'll appear, then make a decision what to do. Meanwhile read this thread with helpful links
https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-T400-T500-and-newer-T/sierra-mc7710/td-p/3542322

mc7710 with IDs of mc8355 will be accepted by the BIOS but a lot of troubles with drivers might appear. So, I'd not perform this.

Re: LTE WWAN Modules for T430 with Windows 10

I purchased the MC7710 LTE module, which arrived today. It had the correct hardware ID by default (1199:68a2) so I didn't need to modify them to get it to work - it worked right out of the box without any problems. x220forme - Thank you so much for getting me through this!
