Lenovo T400s problems after cleaning

2012-12-27, 20:45 PM

Hello,

I have a Lenovo T400s that was full of dust, so because of high temperature and slow performance, I decided to clean the cooler all by myself.

After carefully removing every single part, I managed to reach the cooler and clean it. I've successfully reattached every single piece of hardware, with temperature now reaching a maximum of 70 degrees Celsius in high-performance mode. Still, there are a bunch of issues that I'm yet to repair:

1. The overall performance of the laptop is slower than before, with the browser and all the other apps clearly slowed down by something, even after starting the laptop.

2. Sometimes, whenever I plug in the power cord, the laptop freezes all of a sudden. It happened to me several times either when the OS is loading or when I was working on the laptop. After I cleaned the laptop, I got an error saying "Plugged in, not recharging," but I've fixed it by removing and reconnecting the battery.

3. The Bluetooth adapter doesn't seem to work anymore. Whenever I try to connect a Bluetooth mouse, the laptop freezes.

Any idea on the source of these problems and how could I fix them? Thanks in advance.

I'm running Winodws 8 and the standard hardware configuration of the laptop, with no upgrades.

It really sounds like the fan isn't seated correctly or that you didn't use thermal paste. It is easy to get a wire wrong and put it in so the heat sink doesn't make good contact.  If the heat sink doesn't make good contact or if there is no thermal paste, it will certainly shut off in 10 seconds.

It is hard to say without knowing what you removed.

I've removed every single part, as the cooler is placed right under the mainboard. Everything seems to work well except for the aforementioned issues.

Did you go and reset the BIOS after reassembly. Make sure the items are set properly there. Removing the mainboard battery clears the CMOS BIOS settings.

Hello scaryninja,

I would probably make sure all the connections in the computer are snug.  This would just make sure that the connections are good.

If the computer is running slow when concerning programs try and run disk defragmenter and disk cleanup.  You can search for these in the start menu search bar.  They would make it easier for your computer to load some information.  If the computer is freezing when connecting a mouse then I would uninstall and re-install the Bluetooth drivers for the computer.

Bluetooth and Modem tab within this link: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/default.page

If the computer continues having issues within the Operating System and being slow then I would look into resetting the OS to factory Defaults.

Hope this helps,

Alex

memory can be the biggest issue that will cause crashes. Be certain its seated properly. Typically inserted at a slight angle and once in and seated the SODIM is pressed and some clip hold it flush with the sytems board.

Running memory diagnostics may reveal if there is a problem there in which you would work on isolating the cause.

Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to work.

I've reset the CMOS and the BIOS, I've reconnected the battery several times, but now the laptop only turns on for a few seconds and then turns off all by itself. Then, no power seems to be available, so I need to remove the battery and reconnect it to turn the laptop on once again.

Memory seems to be ok, at least that's what I manage to see in BIOS before it shuts down.

Any other suggestion?

This appears to be now different that the original post.
- the system seeing the memory is not an indication of good memory or that its properly seated.
- assuming there are no beep codes on power on
- flip the unit over and as you turn it one verify the fan is spinning.

If its turning off that soon. Something is fundamentally wrong.
- overheating (heat sink issue or fan)
- power problem

Loose memory or something marginally connected.

Sound like you'll have to verify all the basics. Did you remove the heatsink cooling fan entirely from the CPU. Usually some silicone white heatsink compound is needed to archieve a good heat sink coupling.

As far I can tell, the fan is spinning, and I'm not sure it would get so hot in 10 seconds to turn off. It doesn't stay on more than that.

I did not remove the heat sink at all, I only cleaned the cooler.

There's only one beep when I turn the laptop on because I need to reconfigure the BIOS after the reset. But I can't do that because it turns off too quick.

As for the power issue, how could I check for it?

Power will be difficult or impossible if its an internal problem. But the AC adapter output voltage can be metered (carefully). If the battery is not dead, you could see if it boots any differently from it alone. Next pull the battery pack and try the AC adapter only.

Why is this happening now when that wasn't the problem after the cleaning in the 1st post. Failing that I thing once you have elimated all the external items and properly seated memory its opening it up and check for bad connected items
