Lenovo T410 - Battery Plugged in and Not Charging

Recently my T410 laptop has had issues with charging the battery, the battery is plugged in and not charging.

I have attempted updating the firmware for the battery, it failes half way through as the battery cannot be not identified.

The lenovo power mannager does not resolve the issue either as it cannot detect the battery.

Any advice on diagnostics or resolutions would be greatly appreciated, as after contacting lenovo support, they simply told me to replace the battery. Which I am happy to do but only as a last resort.

Re: Lenovo T410 - Battery Plugged in and Not Charging

Hi there, David –

Thank you for writing in to the Lenovo Forum - happy to have you here today.

It might be a problem with power manager, after standby or hibernation periods.

Then simply restart your system or you uninstall and reinstall power manager to solve the problem.

Power manager for windows 7

Power manager for windows 8

If it is hardware related, please take your battery out.

Then power up with AC only. Power down, unplug AC and hit power button ten times.

Then install your battery pack, plug in AC and power up.

Then see if the battery gauge is working.

Update us how it goes.

Re: Lenovo T410 - Battery Plugged in and Not Charging

Hello Shashi,

Thank you for your welcome and detailed advice.

I have attempted your two solutions, and alas they both have not resolved the problem. Pressing the button 10 times, should be done normally? simply pressed softly and not pressed for very long.

Do you have any other alternative solutions?

Re: Lenovo T410 - Battery Plugged in and Not Charging

However you could try the below steps:

  1. Unplug AC adapter (remove from notebook).
  2. Remove main battery
  3. Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds (power drain)
  4. Replace main battery
  5. Replace AC adapter
  6. Turn ON the computer and continuously tap F1 to boot into the BIOS, when you're in, press F9 to load defaults and press F10 to save and exit.

Your issue is similar to this thread.

Update us how it goes.

[ Edited ]

Hello Shashi,

Unfortunately the first solution did not work. I have seen threads similar to this one and have attempted this solution previously, unfortunately as my battery is not being detected my power manager, so it does not offer those options.

I have noticed the laptop is heating up quiet alot near the front, just underneath the mousepad, maybe this symptom could help.

Re: Lenovo T410 - Battery Plugged in and Not Charging

The solutions is to install ATK Hotkey Driver, and besides that you have to prior install net.framework 3.5 sp1.

Also, click here for better understanding.

For heating issue, hence I would suggest you to visit the nearest Lenovo service center for hardware assistance.

Re: Lenovo T410 - Battery Plugged in and Not Charging

Hello Shashi,

I have attempted this solution installing the new drivers and net.framework 3.5 (which I found on a microsoft website), so far we have not solved the problem unfortunately, I will try again and see if there is any change and also check for anything disturbing the pins of the battery and computer. Thank you for the link, it helped explain some of the previous attempts we used.

Any final ideas, or is it looking like the computer will be a desktop until I get a new battery or possibly reformat the computer.

Re: Lenovo T410 - Battery Plugged in and Not Charging

Is it possible that you have a non-lenovo battery?

Re: Lenovo T410 - Battery Plugged in and Not Charging

With battery installed and AC adapter plugged in, boot up laptop. Go to the Power Options control panel (may also be accessible by right-cling the battery status icon in the System Tray). Set the System Standby option when plugged in to Never. I also choose the Always on Power Scheme, but I don't know if this aspect is crucial, whereas I'm pretty sure the long or never sleep/standby option is. It should be OK to let the monitor and HDD have a timer setting for turn-off, but if in doubt, put them to Never as well, esp the HDD. I also had the Running on Batteries System Standby set to Never, but I wouldn't think that applied in this case, as the AC adapter is being used. However, just to be sure, set it to Never!

Also, Batteries now have charging circuits built into them that relay their charge level. There is also a chances where it may have damaged this circuit. Hence I would recommend you to contact Lenovo service center and report your findings.

Re: Lenovo T410 - Battery Plugged in and Not Charging

Hello again,

Huzzah, it seems to have finally worked, initially after making the changes you reccomended it had not resolved the problem, I had given up, but after rebooting for a second or third time the changes seemed to have taken effect. I belive my battery may be on its last legs as seems to only be capable of lasting 15minutes upon full charge, anyhow I am happy as it means I can change rooms without it immediately turning off.

Thank you for all you advice, I am impressed with the level of service.

All the best,

David
