Lenovo T430 Laptop won't start

2018-07-02, 5:49 AM

I originally bought this off eBay about 2 years ago. The only issue it has had is that the battery seemed to drain quickly as whenever I had the laptop on without the AC adaptor plugged in, the computer would shut off on its own within 10 seconds or so. As long as I plugged in the AC adaptor to the laptop, it ran with no problems

However, when I tried to power on the laptop yesterday, even with the AC adaptor, it would no longer power on. I did just come back home from the airport, so maybe that had something to do with it?

I followed all the steps here: https://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch001127.htm

After following some of the steps, when I hit the power button on the laptop, it would flash for a second or so, and then stop flashing. Nothing ever appeared on the screen

What is the next step for troubleshooting? Do I just have to remove the hard drive and/or RAM and place them back in and try powering it on again? Or take it to a repair shop?

Welcome to the forum!

Try the following trick:

  • Remove the battery
  • Remove the AC adapter
  • Press the power button 10 times
  • Then, press and hold the power button for 30 seconds
  • Connect the AC adapter (no battery!)
  • Try booting again

Let us know the result :-)

Regards!

got the same result as when I tried the other suggestions: when I hit the power button on the laptop, it would flash for a second or so, and then stop flashing. Nothing ever appeared on the screen

Then start removing the following components (apart from battery and AC adapter):

  • Hard disc
  • RAM (both sticks, one under the base, the other under the KB, meaning KB removal)
  • WLAN
  • WWAN or mSata SSD (if available)

Then attach the AC and boot, you should hear a series of beeps, please write them now and post it here. If you hear no beeps, then probably the motherboard is toast...

This document has a detailed steps how to remove the components: click me! Check chapter 9.

I tried to remove the hard drive (the laptop has an SSD) as shown in step 3 on pg. 78 of that guide. However, I can't pull it out. How am I supposed to pull it out? Am I supposed to loosen all the screws on the back of the laptop first?

You need to remove only one screw for the door cover, then normally there is like a black plastic tongue to pull it out.

There's a Lenovo video that shows the procedure here: Service video

I'm able to remove the cover, but I can't pull out the hard drive using that tab in 0:31 of the video. I tried hard to pull it out but it's still stuck there

Is there no tab? Is this a 2nd hand T430?

Eventually try to remove it using tweezers. In worst case scenario, remove the keyboard and palmrest, you will see the drive on the bottom left, try pushing it out.

I just removed the Hard disc, RAM, and WLAN. I then plugged in the AC without the battery, and once again, when I hit the power button on the laptop, it would flash for a second or so, and then stop flashing. Nothing ever appeared on the screen
