Bought one of these on ebay and the battery dies after 20 mins from full after being unplugged from charger- what the heck is going on?- Have I been sold a dodgy laptop?

Welcome to the forum.
What's going on is that the battery is very likely defective.
To confirm this launch the ThinkVantage Power Manager and click the battery tab. What does Battery Condition indicate? In the Battery Details section what are the Full Charge Capacity and Cycle Count readings?
Depending on what claims the seller made about the condition of this T430 you may have recourse, i.e. a new battery or refund, etc.

It's preinstalled on new ThinkPads. Since this is a second-hand system the seller may have installed a generic Windows or uninstalled Power Manager. You can download a copy from Power Manager for Windows 7 and Vista. You can also download a generic battery app like BatteryBar. The free Basic version is all you need.
