Lenovo T440 Fn key hijacking entire keyboard

2016-06-29, 19:06 PM

Hi all,

I have a problem with the Fn key on my T440. It appears that the Fn key is hijacking the entire keyboard and doesn't let go regardless of what I do. I have toggled and played around every option in the bios including enabling/disabling FnLock, Sticky Fn, and Ctrl/Fn swap to no avail. The way the Fn key is hijacking everything is as follows.

ESC key *always* toggles Fn lock on its own, so I don't have an ESC key at all. When the Fn key's light is off, the keyboard (alpha and num keys) don't type anything, but it seems like the keys are sending keycodes which should be sent when combined with Fn. In other words, when I press the 's' key, for example, I don't see anything typed, but a 'OneDrive' window pops up instead. This tells me the hardware key is fine and is getting pressed, but the computer assumes the Fn key is pressed *at all times* even though the Fn light is off. This happens with every key on the keyboard.

Additionally, if the Fn light is off, the F1-F12 keys work as F1-F12 keys, which is expected (even though, at the same time, the alphanumeric keys don't work as expected). And if the Fn light is on, the F1-F12 keys initiate their special function, again, as expected.

I can toggle Fn light by pressing only the ESC key, as mentioned. I have also installed every driver on the face of planet that is related to my model from lenovo support site. Nothing helps. I'm now typing this with a usb keyboard plugged into the laptop.

This seems to not be a hardware issue and my keys work fine when in BIOS. Also, I have noticed that I cannot run the Lenovo Keyboard Diagnostics utility because it keeps complaining that there has been user interaction even though I'm not at all touching anything within 10ft of the laptop.

Is there anything I can do to fix this issue or is the unit I got borked? I'm past the warranty period, so no warranty either.

Thanks,

srab

I have the exact same issue and am typing from a USB keyboard as a result.  I did take the risk of wiping (cleaning) the keyboard (with laptop powered up) prior to this happening and it seems possible that I had unintendely pressed some combination of keys to cause this to happen, although I am not sure this is related.  I've done this before without worrying too much because I've always been able to correct any uninstended issue (e.g. caplock). The other action that happened before I discovered the keyboard was not functioning correctly, was plugin the computer via the VGA connector to a projector.   Once connected, I could not control the keys and their were other issues (unresponsive, slow, hi cpu usage) almost as if the pc had been hit by a virus.  Updating drivers, bios, etc subsequently has had no effect.

I have the same problem....Whenever I press Escape, it toggles FnLock. I've tried pressing the button while holding Fn as well, and it's still FnLock.

The rest of the Fn functions are acting strange, when the function key is on my F1-F12 does functions that should be done when the Fn key is off and when its on, the F1-F12 does functions that should be done when the Fn key is on. The rest of my keyboard dont respond. I tried resetting but did not work, can someone help me please? Thank you.

I use a Lenovo T440s Windows 10 64bit OS

Hello Yaboki!

Did you try with an external keyboard? Here are other steps you can try: https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/ht103985?Source=social_eservices&Medium=FBPAGE&Term=eServices_&Content=20190519_20190519164836&linkId=67593790.

Hello Yaboki!

Download hotkey drivers and update BIOS, use this link: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-t-series-laptops/thinkpad-t440/downloads
