Lenovo T450s FN key LED

2018-03-21, 6:40 AM

Lenovo T450S originally with Windows7 Professional

Upgraded to 500 GB SSD
Clean install of Windows 10 Creators Update 1709

Upon completion of install downloaded Lenovo System Update v5.07.0070
Lenovo System updated drivers for ALL hardware successfully, no errors reported.
BIOS updated to v1.32

The quirks
-Hot Key Features Integration v9.0.0.7
The FN key led (green light) does not turn on. Tried the FN and ESC keys to activate, no luck
On a similar note the LEDS for Mute (F1) and Microphone (F4) don't work either
However the On Screen Display for volume up/down and mute appears when those keys are pressed
The FN key LED stays lit initally, after all the Windows updates are run the FN Key LED goes dark

-Intel HD Graphics Driver v20.19.15.4835
The video display adapter is the Intel HD Graphics 5500
Resolution of the display is set for the recommended 1920x1080
Text when set for the recommended 125% medium appear large and undefined.
When changing the setting to 100% the text appears better but is still look large and undefined.

Action Items
-Wiped the hard drive and reinstalled Windows 10, same result.
-Installed the following which resulted in no changes
Lenovo Power Management v1.67.14.04
Lenovo System Interface Foundation v1.1.13.

Has anyone encountered this issue before?

I'm not seeing this problem.  Here are the steps I did on my ThinkPad T450s:

1.  clean install Win10 1709

2.  connect to internet

3.  run Windows Update, click on "check for updates" button, reboot as prompted, repeat until no more updates.  It will take like 3-4 times of this.

4.  download and install hotkeys from support website, at the end, make sure to keep the box checked about "install now" and then wait for it to finish.  You'll know it's finished when you see a message like "completed successfully"

5.  reboot

After this, FnLock is working, as well as speaker mute (F1) and microphone mute (F4).

What version of BIOS do you have installed?

Can you try installing Win10 v1709 with the latest BIOS v1.32 JBET68WW.

When I did this experiment the machine had v1.30 JBET66WW.  Now I have installed the latest v1.32 JBET68WW and the hotkeys are still working.  I will reinstall Win10 and try again, but I am 99.99999% sure this won't make any difference.

What are you doing differently than me?  Are you installing all the Windows updates and repeating until no more updates?  If you go into Device Manager, are there any unknown devices?

I just thought of something.  How did you install Win10?  Run msinfo32.exe and look for "BIOS Mode".  This needs to be UEFI.  If it's not, it means Win10 was installed wrong.  If so:

1.  reboot and press F1 to enter BIOS setup

2.  at "Restart" menu, set OS Optimized Defaults to "Enabled"

3.  press F9 to load setup defaults

4.  press F10 to save and exit

5.  re-install Win10

Re: Lenovo T450s FN key LED

2018-03-22, 20:00 PM

Before the FN key LED issues began the T450s was running Win10 v1703. BIOS v1.30 JBET66WW. Was prompted by Lenovo System Update for critical updates so I let it run. I didn't pay attention to what the updates were.
After ALL the updates completed I noticed Win10 v1709 was installed. BIOS was also upgraded to v1.32 JBET66WW.
The FN key LED issue began after this update.

After attempting to update numerous drivers and hot key integration, etc. I bit the bullet and ran a clean installation of Win10 v1709.
Here are my steps

Deleted the primary partition and formatted the hard drive.
Proceeded with WIn10 installation on primary partition.

I manually connected to my wireless network after completion of OS install.
Installed Lenovo Vantage and proceeded to update ALL hardware drivers. There are no unknown or disabled devices in Device Manager.
After the completion of hardware updates, Windows updates ran.
Final OS build is 16299.309
Windows10 Pro v1709
The FN key LED does not light up. Similar for F1 and F4. However when the FN key is pressed for the assigned the OSD does appear.

I've tried numerous clean installations of Win10 v1709
Using Lenovo System Update 5 and or Lenovo Vantage to run system updates.
End result is the same, the FN key LED doesn't light up.

Occassionally the FN Key LED stays lit after OS installation completion.
However after shutting down for the day, the next day the FN key LED is out again.

As a last attempt I rolled the BIOS back to v1.30.
Connected to my wireless network after OS install for Lenovo Vantage.
This seems to have done the trick, the FN key LED remains lit.
As an additonal test I rolled back to WIn10 v 1703. The FN key LED remains lit

I will see if the FN key LED remains lit later tonight.
So I'm curious as to why you had no issues with either BIOS version and Win10 v1709.

Created new media stick using USB flash drive. Pressed F12 during startup and booted from the USB flash drive.
I'll need to verify if its set for UEFI mode.

BIOS was  set for Both, changed to UEFI only

Zeroed the hard drive and ran clean install of Win10 v1709

For the duration of the evening, FN key LED remianed lit.

@Powered down the T450s @ 1:30 AM

Powered on this morning, FN key LED is dark again

Maybe I don't understand what problem you are reporting.  Can you toggle the FnLock LED by pressing Fn+Esc?  Does the on-screen indicator appear?

The green LED, top right of the FN key is not on.

If I toggle FN and Esc keys the OSD display appears to indicate FN on and off

With the FN key enabled (based on the OSD) the green LED light is still off on the FN key
