Lenovo T460 with Intel SSD Pro 5400s 256gb Part# SSS0L25072 failure

I work with an enterprise company who are suddenly experiencing a large amount of failures with these machines which have these ssd drives. They often fail with a BSOD and on the follow up boot will hang at the windows logo after POST. The hanging will persist indefinitely thereafter.

According to the Lenovo Security Advisory: LEN-15217  ( located at https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/lt/en/product_security/ps500118? ) this is a known issue which can be mitigated by upgrading the firmware from L10P to L15P. However, when using the provided solution (FWSD26), one will notice that this part# is not supported. No firmware upgrade is possible with this device. --

SSS0L25071

L10P and below

This raises many questions. Do you have plans to revise the firmware upgrade tool to include this part#? Perhaps it was just missed by accident? Or was there a reason this firmware upgrade was neglected from being included for this specific part#? You include All other Intel SSD Pro 5400s models except for the 256gb.. Why?

Please advise.

After some digging around we have been able to resolve this issue with a tool that was tough to find on the internet as all the listed links point to the "fwsd26" version. The correct version (FWSD48) for resolving the problems in our scenario can be found here

Similar situation here, need to apply firmware update to a number of machines.  Are there any risks with this firmware update?

As always, you should suspend bitlocker recovery before applying a firmware update.

We have not had any issues applying this firmware update in both proactive and reactive settings. Firmware update L16P, applied using FWSD48, has resolved our issues with the intel ssd pro 5400s 256gb drive.

Re: Lenovo T460 with Intel SSD Pro 5400s 256gb Part# SSS0L25072 failure

Hi sam8283,

Our process has been to take the hard drive out of the affected machine and plug it into a secondary bay within a working machine and run the FW update tool from there. The process can be lengthy (up to an hour) as the system often attempts to scan the affected drive and attempt repair or sits at POST for 20-30 minutes.. This happens intermittently in my experience (not every drive, not every time). This may not be an issue technically but I did feel I should mention it to prevent you from feeling discouraged as if it may not be booting.

Recap:

  1. Take out the SSD 5400s
  2. Plug it into a working machine's secondary bay
  3. Turn on the machine and update the FW once you are in Windows.

Do not attempt to update the SSD 5400s while plugged into an external sata - to - usb cable.. The FW tool will not see the drive Smiley Sad (May be due to EFI boot? untested)

Re: Lenovo T460 with Intel SSD Pro 5400s 256gb Part# SSS0L25072 failure

Absolutely normal. The console window will show blank while it attempts to process the read/write.

Every step made during this process seems lengthy, I believe it's due to the corrupt DRAM but that's a bit beyond my expertise, so it's purely a guess.
