Re: Lenovo ThinkPad T410 graphics card upgrade?

Hey guys! I recently bought a used Lenovo ThinkPad T410 and although it is quite fast, it can't handle the games I usually play. I was wondering if it were possible to upgrade my graphics card on this model. Thank you!

Welcome to the forum!

Unfortunately not :smileysad:

The graphic chip is soldered into the motherboard. The only way of getting a better card is getting a new motherboard

Do you have a T410 with NVIDIA graphics or Intel graphics?

You could also attach an external GPU via ExpressCard.

X61T: L7500, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD, XGA screen, Ultrabase
X200s: SL9400, 6GB RAM, 64GB SD card, WXGA+ screen

Re: Lenovo ThinkPad T410 graphics card upgrade?

You have the following options:

A) Replace the motherboard with one with NVIDIA graphics. I don't recommend this because it's just not cost-effective at this point.

B) Install an external GPU via the ExpressCard. This is an option, but you'll have to deal with the rough edges of using an eGPU (drivers, bandwidth limitations). This also is not a portable solution.

C) Get a new laptop suited for your use case.

Re: Lenovo ThinkPad T410 graphics card upgrade?

I will probobly go with B. I got this laptop for a steal on ebay. Everything on it but the graphics card will support everything I need it for. If I want to get a new computer for gaming, Ill proboly end up building one. Do you have any suggestions for an Express Card GPU? Im not too worried about mobile gaming.

Re: Lenovo ThinkPad T410 graphics card upgrade?

Have a look on the TechInferno forums. You'll need an ExpressCard to PCI-E adapter, as well as an separate power supply.

As for the card itself, you should choose an NVIDIA card newer than Fermi to take advantage of Optimus compression (which also allows you to pipe the display output back to the internal display, albeit at an additional 20% performance hit).
