Lenovo Thinkpad T520 disk's hang issue

Hello Lenovo friends!

I've got ThinkPad T520 and I really love it, but there is no issue that makes me worried about data security. There are some moment when hard disk gets hang up for about one minute. It is rate, usualy it happens when trying to log into Windows 7... interface is still active, but hand disk is hang (green diode is on continuously), it seems that everything is blocked because of disk, yet it looks like it is doing nothing during this time. There are also some rare cases when it happens when I do some work on it.

I am not sure what is the reason of this issue. I guess that it might be either:

a) internal (maybe physical) fault in hard disk OR

b) there are some services in Windows 7 that makes it hang so long (my Windows directory is about 17 GB ! It was already that big after installation, I am second user of this computer, I bought it one month ago, there are still 2 years of warranty).

The hard disk is C300-MTFDBAK128MAG (SSD). Do you have similar experience with this computer / hard disk ?

I called support call center in Poland today and they suggested to do:

1) run and test Windows 7 in "diagnostic mode" (msconfig) OR

2) Update firmware of this hard disk OR

3) send the computer to servicve center

Obviously I don't want to waste time, because I use this computer for work. Do you know what might be the issue and what to do best to fix it?

Thanks a lot!

Re: Lenovo Thinkpad T520 disk's hang issue

Use SSDlife to evaluate the drive health. And/or use HDTune to check the SMART data.

This behavior is consistent with bad sectors on a spinning platter drive; I'm not sure what the equivalent on an SSD is.

Re: Lenovo Thinkpad T520 disk's hang issue

I did tests which show no errors. Funny, just before I decided to post this, when I was saving a docx document, my hard disk got hang again for about one minute :/

What to do now? Lenovo, please help Smiley Happy

Re: Lenovo Thinkpad T520 disk's hang issue

That's weird... The C300 should be reporting a lot more information?

Do you have the latest Intel Rapid Storage drivers?

Re: Lenovo Thinkpad T520 disk's hang issue

Thats the trouble with SSD's when the controller chokes or croaks the data just stops. I saw that fixing my buddies system. He had a OCZ drive and it work for a while then after it heats up it just plan stops, occasionally some data woud respond but not enough to really do anything. Any attempt to recover or backup from a dying SSD is futile.

Re: Lenovo Thinkpad T520 disk's hang issue

Well, that's strange, but as you can see that's all SMART data available.

I am going to install Rapid Storage drivers now. If this won't help, then I guess I will try to update disk's firmware...

One more important question to Lenovo: what is the... how to say... proof of waranty for my computer? All I have is an invoice from the internet shop where I bought it (I am it's second owner), 4 burned DVDs with recovery files and I have also registred the computer using software that showed up after installation of Windows 7. There is "Lenovo ThinkVinatage Toolbox" which says that I have still 614 days of warranty (which is absolutely great software BTW!), but I want to make sure what is really the proof of warranty.

Thanks a lot!

Re: Lenovo Thinkpad T520 disk's hang issue

Warranty transfers with the machine, which is attached to the unique serial number of the machine.

Re: Lenovo Thinkpad T520 disk's hang issue

Thank you for information!

Interesting thing - after installing Intel Rapid Storage drivers the problem I have described did not occure anymore. I wonder what might have been the real cause of that problem o.O  It might be helpful for other users too. Thanks!

Re: Lenovo Thinkpad T520 disk's hang issue

I am still using the original systems HD. I have noticed the partitioning by Lenovo has a SYSTEM_DRV partition which is Active while the Windows 7 C drive is not. I believe that their Enhanced Experience 2.0 uses that Rapidstart with that partition with optimized boot files defragmented on that partition.

However that does not explain to me why it would cause your problem since those files should be on C even though its no loading from it directly.
