Lenovo thinkpad t470s core i5 Ram and storage upgrade

2019-09-25, 19:36 PM

Hi All,

I just bought a second hand lenovo thinkpand t470s that has core i5 and 8gb of ram, and 256GB NvMe storage. I was wondering to what capacity can I upgrade the ram? Right now I have one slot of ram available and there is a 4GB DDR4 ram stick in there. Can I replace this with a 16gb DDR4?

Also there is a 256GB NVME storage, whats the max capacity that I can replace this with? Can I replace it with 1TB?

will upgrading these parts create overheating problems? and how much will the ram and or NVME upgrade stress my battery life? anyone that has done this upgrade for this mode? Thanks.

Hello there, Moses89!

Welcome to the Lenovo forum discussion!

Based from the reference guide https://psref.lenovo.com/Product/ThinkPad/ThinkPad_T470s?CID=ww:lenovosocial:20x9m6 of the Lenovo ThinkPad T470s, the maximum capacity of the RAM that the laptop can hold is up to 20GB or 24GB max7
/ 2400MHz DDR4. For the NVME storage, it is tested to hold up to 1TB. You can check the complete spec of the Lenovo ThinkPad T470s in the link that I have provided. Also, some model variant of the laptop come with a 1TB NVME M.2 PCIe. For the battery life span, upgrading the hardware components of the laptop can consume more on the battery. Also, you need to consider the settings on the laptop like the screen brightness and the performance settings.

Regards,

The reason that some T470s machines can have 20GB and some 24GB is the fact that the model has either 4 or 8 GB of RAM soldered to the motherboard.  You can add a 16GB DIMM.  I would expect that SSDs larger than 1TB would also work..
