MC7354 on T520 [Main Problem Solved, No LTE however]

2020-02-12, 22:14 PM

I cannot get the MC7354 on the Thinkpad T520 to work. It is constantly complaining that the Hardware switch is off when this laptop does not have a WWAN hardware switch. I also have a MC7700 that is doing the exact same thing.

I can't get either of these cards to work simply cause I can't get them to actually turn on in windows.

I believe the slide switch at the front left controls both the WiFi and WWAN radios

There is a switch there in that position. It is switched on. Turning it off does affect the wifi, but makes no difference for the WWAN

Is it disabled in the BIOS?  (under security/I-O Port Access)

There are two switches for built-in wireless devices - hw and sw. The 1st one is a side switch on the laptop case. The second one appears upon hotkey Fn+F5 pressing once Lenovo Hotkey Features package is installed. The name appropriate tool is TpFnF5.exe

What OS version is running? If win7, is Lenovo Access Connection installed? It has its own tool AcFnF5.exe and resources to "upgrade" the TpFnF5 tool above.

Both Hotkey and AC Fn+F5 tools have their own lists of wireless devices they manage (turn on/off, in particular). So, the key to turn on unapproved wireless device on certain laptop is there, hotkey tool related, no matter whether the BIOS is patched.

Anyway, just issue the AT command AT!PCOFFEN=2 to the modem to ignore the state of its W_DISABLE pin. Of course, to perform that you have to have, temporarily, the laptop w/out white list in the BIOS or external wwan->USB adapter since there should be terminal (modem) port and drivers installed.

Okay, I'll give the AT command a shot. Although I know how to input AT commands on Ubuntu, I do not know how to do that on windows.

EDIT: That AT command is actually returning an error (I'm using putty connected to the COM port of the modem as listed in device manager.)

Firstly, you have to change USB composition of the modem virtual devices (ports) in order to get terminal port, disregarding the OS. Windows doesn't have built-in terminal tool, so use 3rd party one, like PuTTY

I figured out how to get into the terminal using Putty. I can just issue AT and it return OK.

I can also issue AT!ENTERCND="pwd" and it return OK so I know that's working.

The AT!PCOFFEN=2 is returning an error.

What does modem return after:
AT+CFUN?
AT!PCOFFEN?
