Memory upgrade issues on T490 - two modules both give black screens

2019-05-06, 21:06 PM

Hiyas,

I recently purchased 3rd party memory (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07H4XNNXK/) that matches this computers specs, but the computer powers on and sits at a black screen.

I then purchased "compatible" memory, according to both Crucial's website and Amazon's website:
 https://www.crucial.com/usa/en/thinkpad-t490/CT14628403
 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B019FRBHZ0/

but this is also booting to a black screen.

I talked to Lenovo tehnical support who told me I have to buy a module from the Lenovo store. They're $350 there.

Does anyone know of any third-party 16gb modules that work in this laptop for the normal price of around $100?

Did you give the machine several minutes at the black screen before giving up. IIRC it's normal for a black-screen pause when accomodating a large memory increase.  It may sit for some time, then reboot, and should be fine after that.

Not saying that's what is going on, but had to ask...

Ah man, you're a saint! It took about 45 seconds to get past the black screen, but both modules work! Didn't know that was a thing systems had to do. Thank you! Maybe just saved me from sending the thing back.

Since Crucial 100% guarantees their compatibility for 'system specific' parts, they're thoroughly tested, and it would be worth calling their Tech Support line for assistance to troubleshoot the problem, before considering sending them back.   (Same applies to Kingston Memory 'system specific' parts.)
