My T-410 will not access 5 GHz WiFi

I did a search without luck-

I have a T-410 running Win 7 32bit that does not "see" and therefore will not access the 5 GHz WiFi signal from our wireless router even when within 10 feet of the router.

I know this because we have our router set to transmit two different networks (XXX 2.4, and XXX 5.0) and my computer (and also my iPhone 4S) see ONLY the XXX 2.4 network.

We have a T-400 running Win 10, and another T-410 running Win 10 (along with a couple of Samsung phones) and ALL of those can "see" and use the XXX 5.0 network, so I know the network is on-line and working.

I just downloaded the most recent Lenovo update to my computer, which hopefully included the latest drivers for my hardware (including the internal WiFi card).

Is there a way to wake-up my 5.0 GHz ability to "see" and use that band, or is it a Win 7 32 bit program inability to utilize the 5.o GHz WiFi band?

Thanks!

Bob

Re: My T-410 will not access 5 GHz WiFi

BTW, the T-410 not "seeing" the 5.0 GHz signal shows a WiFi network card in device manager says it is a "11b/g/n Wireless LAN Mini-PCI Express Adapter II"

Not sure if different T-400 Series laptops use hardware of limited capability.

Re: My T-410 will not access 5 GHz WiFi

Your wifi adapter is Realtek RTL8191SE, supports 2.4 GHz networks only. So, it can't see 5 GHz networks.

Re: My T-410 will not access 5 GHz WiFi

Thanks- That certainly explains it!

Our Comcast Internet router sometimes provides 30 M download (max) at 2.4 GHz (usually only 12-15 M), but it shows 200 M download wirelessly on 5 GHZ. The Comcast tech said that I can only expect 15 M download on 2.4 average, so I was hoping to use the 5 GHz signal, which is LOTS faster. He was AMAZED that while he was at our house he saw 30 M down on www.SpeedTest.net.

I actually thought 2.4 GHz was capable of 54 M download, but I guess the latest Comcast Xfinity dual band router is unable to transmit at that speed on 2.4 GHz.

The much older T-400 WiFi is a Intel (R) WiFi Link 5100 AGN that IS 5 GHz capable. I guess I would have thought the newer, better equipped T-410 would have had an equal or better WiFi adapter.

Live and learn.

Thank-you for the information!

Bob

Re: My T-410 will not access 5 GHz WiFi

I looked up " BUY Lenovo T-410 WiFi Cards," and found :

Intel 6300 AGN 450M Wifi Wireless Card IBM Thinkpad t410

My computer is a T-410, but the product ID says "2516-DCU" and no additional product information.

Are all T-410s similar with reagard to what cards will work in them?

Not sure if the new card would be compatable and would be 2.4/5.0 compatable?

Is there a better WiFi card selection I should consider?

Re: My T-410 will not access 5 GHz WiFi

Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 is a very good adapter, capable to achieve the speed 450 mbps with appropriate antennas set. Another one is an Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6200, up to 300 mbps. Both are dual band adapters, 2.4/5 GHz.

As I see T410 uses two antennas set. Both seem support 3x3 mode which 6300 needs. To make sure your laptop antennas supports 6300 maximum speed capabilities disassemble laptop. There should be free white antenna cable near to the wlan adapter slot. Anyway, 6300 is able to achieve 300 mbps speed with two antennas.

You can purchase any wlan adapter above with Lenovo service p/n only (FRU) - 60Y3233 (Intel 6300), 60Y3231 (Intel 6200). The same but generic Intel adapters or the ones for another laptop manufacturer brands will not work in T410.
