Need Windows 7 CD key for T410

I have a Lenovo T410 Laptop, Windows 7 Professional - x64 that is still under warranty.  In the last few days I keep getting

this dialog box that says "This computer is not running genuine Windows".  When I click the "resolve online now" link it

wants me to install software.  when I run the software, it then prompts me to pay for a genuine copy.

The computer was purchased directly from Lenovo, so I am confident that it is running a legitimate copy of Windows.

I called Microsoft, and they had me run the Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool which showed a corrupt registry

component. Microsoft stated they need the installation CD key to fix this issue and to verify and authenticate the Windows

license.  There was no Windows 7 sticker with the license key anywhere on the computer as far as I can see.  I have searched through the material supplied with the computer, however no windows 7 license or key was provided.

I used a keyfinder tool, but it says the registry entry is corrupt.

Where do I find the key?

Model 2516-CTO, S/N XXXXXX

The sticker should be under the battery.

Re: Need Windows 7 CD key for T410

The key is located on a sticker on the bottom of the laptop, and looks something like this, XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX.
It seems to me you may have been hit with a virus. Some has been known to steal keys, switch keys, or make your key look fake to MS. What AV do you have on your PC?

Re: Need Windows 7 CD key for T410

Before you use that Window 7 Key under the battery, it may be better for you to recover your computer to the factory settings instead.

This is because whatever caused your key to be corrupted or lost may still be there, you may lose that second key!!!

Recovering to factory settings restore your default key issued by lenovo which is DIFFERENT from the one below the battery.

Re: Need Windows 7 CD key for T410

I have a lot of programs installed - does restoring to factory settings keep these?  Or is it like getting a new computer?

The computer just had the motherboard replaced under warranty, this problem just started after it came back from the Lenovo repair facility.

I tried to recover the key, but the keyfinder said the file was corrupt.

Re: Need Windows 7 CD key for T410

factory restore wipes out everything and reinstall the os from scratch.

Yes the OS will detect a new motherboard and ask you to reactivate, so you have to use the key under the battery.

In the future, you need to provide that critical piece of information, to save time B-)

If it just came back with a repaired/replaced motherboard, and this happened, I would strongly suggest sending it back to repair again. Restoring to factory setting yourself, or installing a new window 7 or keying in the 2nd win7 key at the back of the laptop may not solve the root problem.

Anyway, recovering to factory settings means it's like fresh from the factory, so neither program files or user data will be restored. Hence before you do anything, it is best to backup those

Re: Need Windows 7 CD key for T410

The following is an excerpt of the chat I had with Microsoft - basically, they want me to purchase a new license.  As for using the key on the computer sticker, the place to re-enter the key is missing.  I am baffled.

But this chat is interesting in any case.

Jed: This is for Windows 7 Professional right?

John Gregory: yes

Jed: Thank you for clarifying that. One moment while I check the product key.

Jed: It took a long time for your key to be validated and it is a valid Windows 7 Professional OEM copy.

John Gregory: ok, then why is windows saying it is not?

Jed: However, the key is blocked for activation and validation.

John Gregory: now why would that be?

John Gregory: can you unblock it?

Jed: I also checked the activation history, the times that Windows 7 was activated and it has been activated in more than 20 different computers already.

Jed: And since this is an OEM product key, it should have only been installed and activated on the computer that it came with.

John Gregory: well, I only have one computer. It is a factory installed windows 7 installation.

Jed: I see. In this case, you need to get in touch with your computer maker and inform them about this conversation that we had.

Jed: It seems that the product that they installed has already been used on more than one computer.

John Gregory: Lenovo says they only deal with hardware issues - call Microsoft for activation

John Gregory: Lenovo is adamant that they do not deal with any software issues and I should call Microsoft.

John Gregory: I went to Lenovo first.

Jed: Okay. Your other options are to return the product to the reseller.

Jed: Or avail of the Get Genuine Online Kit that is already in its discounted price.

Jed: But what I suggest here is that you get in touch with our Genuine Advantage Team.

Re: Need Windows 7 CD key for T410

It's my understanding that the OEM version of Windows installed at the factory will have the same key and it will be activated at the factory.  It seems that getting the motherboard changed out and the key being corrupted has caused Windows to think it's no longer valid and activated.  I'd send it back to the repair center and let them know what happened.
