Need a charger for Lenovo T410

2017-01-13, 6:51 AM

Hello there folks. I've got a ThinkPad T410 that I has no charger as I threw it away, the cord frayed, didn't work and threw off sparks everywhere. Since then the T410 has just been sitting in storage but now I'd love to get it up and running again. Thing is, I don't remember which charger I need. Lenovo's official page for the T410 says it supports a 65w and a 90w charger and I don't know which one it needs. Does it matter?

Thanks, have a good day.

Hi Ram,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As I understand that you have query regarding T410 AC adapter. Yes, you can use both 65W & 90W Adapter depending upon your usage.

Normally 90W Adapter is used when you are using the system with dock as it will consume more power

List of universal adapter for your T410 65W & 90W

And for more details you can go through the parts list or HMM, page 179

I hope the above information helps.

Please feel free to post in Lenovo Community Forums if you have any further queries!

Regards,

Prabhansh

Sorry if it gets redundant but I need to make absolutely sure: if I'm not using the dock it doesn't matter which charger powers the computer?

Have a good day.

It depends on the graphics adapter as well. Discrete graphics needs more powerfull charger.

Hi again,

Yes if system is equipped with Nvidia Discrete GPU it will require 90W Adapter as it needs more power.

Nevertheless you can still use 65W/95W in your system depending upon your specifications.

I hope the above information helps.

Re: Need a charger for Lenovo T410

Going off on a slight tangent, I tried looking up the exact specs of the machine using it's serial number but Lenovo Support doesn't have that option for some reason. I don't have any manuals or documentation with specs either, so apart from tearing it open, is there any other way to find out whether it has a discrete GPU or not?

Cheers

Have a good day.

is there any other way to find out whether it has a discrete GPU or not?

Install free software like Speccy (from the same people as CCleaner.)

A 90W charger will work regardless.

A 65W may work even if the T410 has a discrete GPU but that will depend on what else is drawing power. For example, if you have the screen at full brightness and are running a CPU/GPU intensive app that's processing data from a DVD, then 65W may not be enough.

Hi again,

There are various methods to check whether system is discrete GPU or not

Firstly, you can check in Device Manager > Display Adapter

If system has discrete Graphics it will reflect there like (Nvidia or AMD) along with integrated one (Intel).

Then you can run this command 'msinfo32' through Run command & goto Components>Display

Even there both the integerated aswelll as Discrete Graphics card will reflect.

Lastly you can install third party software like CPU-Z and check from that.

I hope the above information helps.

That clearly won't work as I did say I don't have a charger, so how can I even boot the computer up? :smileytongue:

Have a good day.

A couple of options.

(1) Borrow a charger from another ThinkPad. A 65W (20V at 3.25A) charger with the round barrel plug should be enough to power on the T410 long enough to install and run a small utility or look at Device Manager, etc.

(2) Find the machine type model (MTM) number: Find Product Name & Serial Number. It will be something like 2516-ADU or 2518-C2U. Ignore the serial number. You can look up the MTM in PSREF or post the MTM here.
