Not booting from cloned SSD

2018-01-27, 16:12 PM

Hi,

I have the lenovo T400 (Windows 7 64 bit) and cloned the existing HDD with Acronis True Image.

When trying to start with the SSD, it beeps once and the cursor in the left top of the screen blinks endless.

I already tried the SATA compatibility mode and did a bios update. No success.

If I replace the SSD with the old HDD Windows starts normally.

Do you have any idea?

Thanks and kind regards

Alex

Re: Not booting from cloned SSD

Hi all,

I got it.

1. New backup with "Rescue & Recovery® 4.52 von Lenovo" on external USB device.

2. Burning the boot cd with this tool.

3. Boot from cd, restore - FAILED: The SSD is smaller than the originial HDD. Restore didn't work.

4. Started windows with original HDD, shrinked the windows parition to 60 GB (SSD has 128 GB), backup again

5. Topic 2/3 worked now.

6. Windows with SSD worked. Extended the windows partition to full SSD size.

Thanks - I hope this instruction helps.

Kind regards

Alex

Welcome to the Community

How did you clone the drive, what mode in? Auto? Manual? As an entire drive or separate partitions one-by-one resizing them?

Thanks for your reply.

Auto. Block-wise. There are three partitions.

I did this SSD tuning about 20 times in past. Only at this "old" Lenovo T400 it seems to be a little bit more difficult.

I also tried to use two other SSDs and one HDD, but the notebook only accepts the original HDD...

Does the BIOS recognize the disk, on Configuration tab and in Boot devices menu?

According to your information there might be incompatibility between the BIOS/EC and drives firmware.

But most likely the issue is caused by 4k sector size ("Advanced format") of new SSDs and HDD you have which the system on T400 might not support.

Read the page below and "Considerations for using 4-kilobyte sector hard drives in Lenovo computers" (the link to pdf file on that page)

Yes. I can choose to boot from the SSD.

The check tool says "no problems".

For me it's not clear: Do I have to use hard drives with or without this feature?

Kind regards

Alex

Old drives like the one in your T400 don't have 4k feature.

The new ones with 4k feature need some efforts described in the pdf manual.

Re: Not booting from cloned SSD

I went through this on my T470.  Both Macrium Reflect and Clonezilla resulted in blinking cursors when I tried selecting the new drive.

Then after hitting F12 I went into the Windows Boot menu (or named similar) rather than going into the drive, played around and not sure what I did, but anyway it booted normally into Windows after that  I wish I could remember what I did, but anyway worth a try.  Now I am on Win 10 so don't know if yours is the same.
