Pre-purchase questions

2009-11-18, 12:26 PM

I want to order a new T400 with 6 GB RAM.  Can someone please tell me:

1) What is the maximum RAM?

2) If want 6 GB ram, isn't it much cheaper to order the machine with 2GB and then order 4 more GB as an accessory and install it myself?

3) I don't coompletely understand the difference between 1 DIMM and 2 DIMMS and the huge price difference. If I order a machine with 2 GB what should I order to upgrade it to 4 GB?

4) In the warranty options, they use the term "Top Seller."  What does that mean?

Thanks

8GB. (Maybe more in the future when higher-capacity DIMMs are available?)

There are (2) slots. Each of which may hold a DIMM with 1GB, 2GB or 4GB capacity. You get a small speed boost if you use two DIMMs of the same capacity. 4GB DIMMs are currently very expensive.

Nothing important to the consumer, AFAIK.

Happy shopping,

Frank

Glad I could help. :smileyhappy:

If you feel like it, it would be great if you'd come back and tell us how your T400 experience goes.

Best regards,

Frank

I would go with either 4 GB or 8 GB, not 6. There have been some problems with video on un-balanced systems.  4 GB SODIMMs are about $250-300 right now, 2 GB are about $30-40.  I had a good deal on upgrades, so I configured with 2 2GB SODIMMS from Lenovo, but normally I would buy with minimum memory and order some corsair or mushkin to save $.  Especially true if you are looking to go 8 GB.

I missed that. Do you have references? Does it matter if video is Intel, ATI or switchable?

Thanks,

Frank

I promise a detailed report.  I read the posts too late, though.  I ordered the system below this afternoon.  Should I change the ram?   I'm a little concerned that the display doesn't show that I chose the LED/backlit option but the sales department says that I did.
