RAM upgrade T470s

2019-05-19, 23:38 PM

Hi everyone,

I'm new on the forum, where I landed by trying to upgrade the RAM on my T470s laptop.

So I have an 8GB RAM module soldered on my machine, which according to every post I have read here is supposed to clock in at 2400 MHz. I thus assume adding a 2400 MHz SODIMM module on the free slot in my laptop would do the trick, and an 8GB stick would give me 16GB of available RAM.

The thing is, when I open my Task Manager and Intel's Extreme Tuning Utility program, the RAM appears to be clocked at 2133 MHz, instead of the expected 2400.

I am therefore worried that if I try to install an 8GB of 2400 MHz module I would end up having compatibility issues.

The other thing is that Lenovo's spec sheet posted on another question about RAM upgrade (available here http://psref.lenovo.com/syspool/Sys/PDF/ThinkPad/ThinkPad%20T470s/ThinkPad_T470s_Platform_Specifications.pdf) says that the T470s is 2400 MHz DDR4 "capable", not that it comes by default with 2400 MHz memory installed.

If someone can help me figure this out I would be very grateful, as my computer seems to use 6.5 GB of RAM with only Chrome open, which limits my performance quite significantly...

I would run a free tool called RamMon and see what exactly you have installed.    RamMon gives you almost too much information, but it is very accurate.

If the RAM Soldered on board is indeed 2133MHz RAM, you can add 2400MHz RAM and it will just clock down to match the slower  2133MHz RAM.

The PSref for that model does list 2133 MHz RAM up in the processor section, so it may indeed be what your system has soldered on board.

Cheers,

Thank you very much for this quick response !

Apparently this tool is not able to read the information on my specific system, but I used CPU-Z (I am kind of mad at myself for not thinking about it before bothering you guys) and it is indeed clocked at 2133 MHz.

Thank you very much for your help !
