Refurbished T410 Windows flakey

A friend dropped off a T410 system. Windows is flakey and locks up after about 5 minutes. Ran the HD test program in the BIOS. It finished but gave me a bunch of 0000 Read verification errors though the controller tested fine.

What I'd like to do is format the Windows partition and re-install. But I don't have Windows disks (there is a COA sticker for Windows 7 Home Premium 64).

Can I build a set of recovery disks from this system? Even if Windows won't run?

Any info would be a great help. Thanks.

Re: Refurbished T410 Windows flakey

Hi TimKp, thanks, I may try that somewhere down the road.

First I'd like to build a set of recovery disks for the T410. I need to build stock system as its owner is a 11-year old grade school student.

I'll do some more forum and howto searching. There's probably a way to do it.

Re: Refurbished T410 Windows flakey

You won't be able to create media from the recovery partition if you cannot run windows.  You need to get some sort of bootable disk diagnostic to test the hard drive. It is probably bad.  Then, you need to contact Lenovo to get recovery disks.

Do the recovery disks do a complete Windows install? Even if I zero/wipe the disk with an utility?

Re: Refurbished T410 Windows flakey

If you have a full set of recovery disks, it will clear the disk and reload including a new recovery partition

Rich -- thanks for the info. My friend is trying to get another one, maybe two years, from the system. I going to order the Lenovo recovery disks.

Re: Refurbished T410 Windows flakey

Turns out the HD held long enough to make a set of recovery DVD's. Did a Windows re-install and the sys is running again. Still getting lots of SMART disk warnings so it's time to replace the disk. Thanks to all who helped. B
