For anyone using an eGPU (DIY ViDock) or a ViDock 3/4/4+ with 4GB or more memory we are stuck using an old BIOS file. The TOLUD was switched from 3.0GB to 3.5GB at some point, across all Thinkpad series BIOS files.
T420s - 1.09 is the highest we can use.
T420 - 1.15 is the highest
X220 - 1.11 is the highest
I'm sure the other series have the same issue as most BIOS changes are across the board with the systems.
More information can be found at:
Those of us who want to use an external GPU device would like to not be stuck using an old BIOS that is missing important fixes for our laptops. Please return the TOLUD back to 3.0GB.

Please make it possible to use external GPUs again. I had to downgrade to 1.11, too. My x220t replaces my whole desktop and I rely on the additional GPU power.
I would really appreciate it if you forward this to your employees, which work on the BIOS updates.

Adding another request to this thread. Another individual using an older x220 bios due to the TOLUD change. It would be nice to see a toggle switch or something hidden so that we can use the updated BIOS.

Also worth providing an option to disable the x16 pci-e port hosting the dGPU [T420/T420s/T520 only]
In addition to shrinking TOLUD/TOLM it would also would be useful to be able to disable the x16 port (0:1.0) that the NVS4200M is hosted off. That port would always be enabled on a T420/T420s/T520s that is optioned with the NVS4200M.
Disabling it is done by with the equivalent of 'setpci -s 0:0.0 54.l=0:2' in the bios. As that field is TXT locked by the Series-6 chipset, it's impossible to disable that port after bios bootup which was possible using Series-5 and older chipsets.
Without such an option, folks looking to implement an eGPU may forego the NVS4200M option as it otherwise adds complexity in getting two NVidia GPUs (dGPU and eGPU) working in an Optimus configuration. No one has as yet proven that to be possible when using a Series-6 chipset.

The ability to use an eGPU was one of the reasons I bought the X220.
Now I am kind of angry that it is not possible anymore with the new BIOS versions that are fixing some serious problems (thotteling, fan noise etc.).
Please change that! A simple switch somewhere in the BIOS would be enough.

I agree. My Vidock 4 is now sitting in a drawer until we have a new BIOS with 3 GB TOLUS. We need this option to switch TOLUD in your latest BIOS. Please work on this.
Thanks!

I hate to open another issue myself, but I was looking forward to this functionality as well. Someone please correct this!

Received my custom ordered T420s and it will not allow me to downgrade below BIOS 1.12. So I cannot use an eGPU with 4+GB of memory at all! My preconfigured model (417153U) that I use at work allows me to use BIOS 1.09 and an eGPU with 4+ GB of memory.
Please at least respond to us and let us know what's going on.
