STOP: 0x0000007E pci.sys error when installing Windows XP

I am trying to delete the original partitions on my T400 so that I can install Windows XP.  I have booted from a CD and as Windows XP loads I get the above error.  I have disable shadowing, changed the HD to compatibility, core multi-processing is also disabled.  Any ideas?

Hello vijaysaradhi

I'm using an original XP setup CD.  The problem is that this is a T400 laptop and I can't remove any hardware without destroying the pc.

Re: STOP: 0x0000007E pci.sys error when installing Windows XP

There may be a device driver conflict with your  pc while windows is getting installed, you may also want to check out the memory and the HDD ,i am not sure enough but you could try to test both  of them once

for memory diagnostics download memtest

[ Editado ]
What version is the Windows XP disc are you using? RTM, SP1, SP2 or SP3? Since this issue looks like a PCIe issue which requires installation using a SP2 or later slipstreamed disc. If your XP disc is an earlier version then slipstream the latest service pack and then try the installation.

Hello Miner,

I've changed the version of the install cd and it worked.  Thanks for the help from both of you.

Regards,

Roberto

Thanks a whole bunch Miner.  I was having the same problem until I used my slipstreamed SP3 cd.

I can't afford to lose any more hair.  Reading your message was a godsend.
