Sound/Audio not working - Windows cannot verify the digital signature for the driver required...

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad T440 (20B6005RUS) running Windows 7 Pro 64 bit with service pack 1. The audio drivers stopped working. Device Manager has 2 sound devices, High Definition Audio Device and Realtek High Definition Audio.  To get the drivers/sound to work I have to press F8 and disable the driver signature enforcement. I went on Realtek's website and tried their drivers. They did not work. I was told a Windows update caused the audio driver to stop working. I uninstalled both devices with their drivers and hoped Microsoft's own audio driver would install but a driver is not found. Is there any solution I can try? Should I try a different audio driver? I appreciate anyone's help. Attached is a screenshot of what I get in Device Manager.

Welcome to Lenovo Community! And happy to have you here.

 

As I understand that you are facing issue with Audio driver in your T440 

First of all it will be helpful if you'll share the snaps of Device Manager > Sound, Video & Game Controllers 

Whether any other drivers are present under that section or not & also let me know if any unknown devices are there is Device Manager.  

 

Please let me know the above requested details to help you.

Hi Prabhansh,

 

Thank you for your e-mail. There are 2 devices listed uner Sound, video and game controllers, High Definition Audio Device and RealTek High Definition Audio. Attached is a snapshot. Both devices use different drivers. I took more snapshots. If you need to see them let me know. Can I post more than one attachment at a time to my reply? I expanded device manager. There are no unknown devices. I was testing these 2 devices last week. After pressing F8 to disable the driver enforcement I disabled the High Definition Audio Device and left the Realtek High Definition Audio enabled and the sound worked.

Hello Jim,

 

Thanks for sharing the snaps, the Audio device itself is in yellow exclamation mark which is being the main reason as there is no Sound output.

I'll suggest you to first enable the driver enforcement and then uninstall both the High Definition Audio Device and RealTek High Definition Audio proceed for Windows restart.

So once there is only High Definition Audio Device under Sound, Video & Game Controllers either update the drivers manually from Device Manager or run Lenovo System update.

 

Note- Also update the Audio drivers from Lenovo Site.

Prabhansh,

 

When I took the screenshot I did not press F8 to disable the driver signature enforcement. I wanted you to see the audio devices not working.

 

The drive enforement is enabled by default. Should I disable the driver enforcement, uninstall both devices and restart the laptop?

Ohh Sorry for the miss, No don't disable the driver signature enforcement now. Just wanted to confirm first whether have you tried to uninstall both the drivers?

Also have you tried to update the drivers forcefully from Device Manager? And really appreciate your patience.

Yes. I uninstalled both devices. There is a check box to delete the drivers too. I checked it. After restarting Windows detected both devices but failed to install its own driver. I got driver not found. I installed the audio driver from Lenovo's website. The driver installs but it will only work when I do F8 and disable the driver signature enforcement. I even went to Realtek's website and installed their driver but the driver does not work unless I F8 and disable to driver signature enforcement.

I should not have to go through all this time and effort to get an audio device to work. I was told a Microsoft Windows update caused this problem.

Hey again, 

 

If that's the case there are few options left to you either update the drivers using some third party tool like Driver Easy or Driver Pack Solution.

Also there are ways to use unsigned drivers in your system like which is mentioned in this page.
