System Board FRU Identification

2015-08-20, 15:30 PM

Well, my trusty old T510 has finally shagged itself. After months of being reluctant to startup Win XP (in normal mode - I never had any trouble starting it in Safe Mode), it has now gone off in a terminal huff, and refuses to run even the BIOS - the screen remains obdurately blank, and it makes no attempt to access the HDD. I don't even get any error beeps - just stony silence.

All of which is beside the point. I've decided to replace the system board, so have disassembled my machine to get it out (which was epic, even with the hardware manual's aid). Having exposed it, though, I can find no FRU number on it (although just about every other part seems to have one). Since the HW manual lists six variants for my model (4313-CTO), I need to identify mine before I get a replacement. The manual shows what are apparently variants identified by a two hex-digit code followed by 'x' (I guess meaning "any"). The only place I can find any similar identification is in brackets before the LAN MAC address (in my case, that code is 23S) on both the system board and the outer case. Is that it?

I have tried https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/partslookup for my particular unit, but maddeningly it doesn't include the system board in the parts list

I am having a similar problem.  How can one identify a replacement for a system board if one cannot identify the board one wishes to replace?

Triceiver,

partlookup service should (!) show information you need. One of the column in the table means service p/n (FRU).

Also, most ThinkPads have barcode on the memory stick connector with barcode which includes p/n of assembled systemboard. It matches the above one.

If you'll not be able to find information, provide me laptop s/n and barcode (it starts with "11S") via PM service here.

Before you buy a new motherboard, make sure it is not the memory. (can cause same symptoms) Pull out the memory and try to start. A good board will give 1-3-3-1 beep code.

Thanks for the suggestion X220forme.

If by "partlookup service" you mean https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/partslookup, as I mentioned I've already tried it but drew a blank - the system board is not listed (although many other replaceable parts are).

The barcode you mention (found next to the internal DIMM socket - you have to remove the memory card itself  to see it) in my case is 11S75Y4050Z1ZHP1037572.

Regards

Tim

Thanks for the thought, richk, but I had very recently upgraded my laptop's memory to maximum capacity since I intended to have 64-bit linux as an alternate OS, but the upgrade didn't cure the problem, so bad RAM wasn't the cause.

Cheers

There might be two items baseboard related in the parts list.
One of them, in your case, has manufacturer p/n 75Y4050 (have a look at the serial number above). Another one is a systemboard itself, with service FRU we are seeing in the Hardware Maintenance Manual.

So, provide, please, parts list of your laptop, by its serial number. There are two options, "As-Built Only" and "SBOM Only". Their output differs.

As you say, partslookup offers a choice between "SBOM only" and "As-built only". "SBOM only" only requires entry of the laptop's serial number ("R831EC9"), but gives me no list at all. "As-built only" requires the entry of the machine type as well ("4313CTO" in my case), which gives me a list of 16 parts, none of which is identified as the system board. It does include the manufacturer's p/n 75Y4050 as you say, but doesn't give it a FRU number or description.

A quick google doesn't gives any hits for "75Y4050", so I'm no nearer finding a replacement for my system board. I need the FRU number.

Cheers

Here you are:
mfg p/n - 75Y5835, FRU - 75Y4108, description - PLNR DISCR.

P/ns above are old, so they are absent in the recent HMM on the site. But if you'll provide some features (support / doesn't support) of your laptop, I'll try to show you the systemboard FRU from the HMM. I mean:
- Optimus
- AMT
- TPM
