T400 DVD/CD Drive Not Recognizing Discs

2008-10-06, 6:38 AM

I am having an issue with a brand new T400.  When I insert a CD or DVD into the drive, no spin up occurs.  When I double click on the DVD-ROM/CD drive in My Computer, Windows tells me to insert a disc.

I've disabled the Automatic Power Savings for the optical drive.  I've also installed the latest firmware and made the regedit changes suggested by Microsoft (UpperFilter/LowerFilter).

I can't determine whether this is a software bug or hardware failure.  Does anyone have any insight?

I also ran PC-Doctor 5 for Windows and when it came to the CD-ROM test the program asks:

"Please insert a Data CD disc."

After entering a data disc and clicking "OK" I can hear the drive motor for about 1/2 a second and then the drive automatically ejects and I get the message

"Please insert a Data CD disc." again.

Seems like the DVD/CD-ROM is a bum drive.  I literally received this computer last week and am quite disappointed with the quality of the machine after reading so many great reviews and having used my old Thinkpads with nary a problem (T21, T42) for over 8 years now.

I will contact Lenovo for a replacement drive.  Does anyone else have this issue as well?

Sounds like your drive is bad. Call Lenovo, they will send a replacement drive that you can install yourself. They usually overnight it.
