[T400] DVD-RAM extremely slow

Hi,

I just bought a T400 and I'm disapointed because the DVD drive seems to be really slow. I takes about 8 mins to copy 700MB from a CD to the hard drive. With my other laptop it takes about 4 mins.

When I booted up the laptop for the first time, I burned the recovery DVDs, and then I tried the rescue & recovery thing. It took me 10 minutes to boot on the recovery DVD. I started the recovery process at 23:00 and when I woke up at 4:00 in the morning the process was at 15%.

I tried to mount the recovery DVDs on an other machine and what I saw is a lot of errors (bad sectors).

The DVD-RAM is a UJ862A.

Is there something to do to fix that ? Is the DVD drive broken ?

Re: [T400] DVD-RAM extremely slow

Hello,

the recovery dvd´s had to be burned onto cd-r/+r or dvd-r/+r.

To burn it on dvd-ram will lead to your experience and faulty disks.

If you are in warranty, you can get your R&R disks free from Lenovo. Please call support, they will help you.

Kind regards

Andreas

Re: [T400] DVD-RAM extremely slow

Hi Andreas, thanks for your reply.

I never said that I burned the recovery DVDs on a DVD RAM. When I say DVD-RAM I speak about the device. The recovery mediums are DVD+R.

The recovery DVDs are not really the point here, the problem is that the drive is really slow and the DVDs I burn aren't readable. Is there a way to check if it's a hardware issue ? Are there some Firmware updates available ?

Re: [T400] DVD-RAM extremely slow

Hello,

you can try a Linux Live Cd and burn from there.

If it will be sucessfull, the your drive seems ok,

otherwise contact support, they´ll send a new one.

Or try another dvd or cd brand, some drives are very picky, with some brands.

regards

Andreas

Re: [T400] DVD-RAM extremely slow

Hi,

do you know a Linux LiveCD I can load to RAM ? Because if I want to burn something and do speed tests I'll have to eject the liveCD. THe Ubuntu LiveCD I have doesn't have this option (or I didn't see it).

If the drive is broken, will I have to return the laptop or only the drive ?

Re: [T400] DVD-RAM extremely slow

Please try a Knoppix Live Cd.

Or simply use PC Doctor.

Please check if DLA mode of the drive is off.

regards

Andreas

Re: [T400] DVD-RAM extremely slow

Thanks for your help Andreas,

it seems to work better with Knoppix. I also found out that the drive doesn't like the Philips DVDs, when I burn DVDs at full speed, they are not readable. I don't know if that's normal because I can burn these DVDs at full speed without problems on my other machines.

What is DLA and how to check if it's enabled ?

Thanks in advance

Re: [T400] DVD-RAM extremely slow

Hello,

yes, then try just another brand.

DLA = Drive Letter Access, see here.

Disable DLA from autostart. It´s a part from Multimedia Center.

TuneUp Utillities is a confortable way to disable, not delete, the entry.

But, when your Thinkpad is working now, then there no problems with DLA.

Regards

Andreas
