T400 hangs and system tray becomes black.

2010-05-03, 20:56 PM

I have a T400 with XP SP 3 with a Logitech rollerball mouse on the USB port.  About a month ago the machine started to lock up when left idle.  I would come back to the machine and while I had mouse control but no keyboards command would work.  Crtl-Alt-Del would not give any response.  The system tray would be black so I could not get to the Start menu.  Clicking on any desktop icons produced no results.  The only way out of the problem is to power off and power on.

I have done a chkdsk -F and it reported no errors.  I have at times tuned off the wireless adapter from the front of the laptop but again that had no effect.  The machine is protected by McAfee Agent 4.0.  The log for McAfee shows no virus found and is up to date.  Note the problem proceeded the McAfee hang issue and I avoided loading the bad dat file that caused that problem.

I do often see before I have to power cycle the machine the following in the Event Viewer Category 52, Event ID: 4354 with the following message:

"The COM+ Event System failed to fire the StartScreenSaver method on subscription {F6FE5592-FCBC-44AD-A836-D37F5085ED5B}-{00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}-{00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}.  The subscriber returned HRESULT 80004001.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp."

Any ideas on fixing this hang or lack of response to the keyboard or the black system tray problems?

Thanks,

GG

The Event System failed to fire the StartScreenSaver may coincide with the hang/black system tray but does not itself cause the problem.  I have had at least 3 cases of those messages today without having to restart the system.

Consider updating your graphics driver as well as any patches for windows that you might be missing. Also update the BIOS as that might be a problem.

Hi Zerofire,

Thanks for looking into the issue.

What I did was apply 4 updates from Lenovo: Windows XP Update Q970685 version 1; Lenovo Wireless USB Ports ver. 1.4.31.4; Intel 82567 Gigabyte Network Connection for XP ver 9.5.10.1003; Think Pad Power Mgmt Driver 1.60.

My guess is that the Power Mgmt Driver was what fixed the problem.

That is good to hear. Always make sure that you have the newest patches, drivers and BIOS as they have many corrections to the simplest problems.
