I have a very annoying problem on an otherwise excellent machine.
Whenever I'm playing my music through my media player, or watching youtube, I would get crackle and popping sound from the speaker (same thing with my headphone).
I have installed the latest drivers from lenovo.
Any idea how I might be able to fix this?
Any chance I might be able to find prev version of the sound driver somewhere just to try it out?

i have searched though google about this kind of topic. It seems that no one have exact answer for this problem. No one suggested whether this should be driver problem or hardware defects.
I am only having problems when the system come up from hibernate or standby mode. The crackling sound occur or no sound afterwards.
Hope someone can give hints on this.

xpking, I just found the solution to my problem. Although it's quite a bit different than what you're having, in the sense that I always have sound and the crackling noise existed whenever the system is on, it's probably worth a try.
This is the solution from another post in the lenovo forum:
I couldn't find the prev driver version that the post mentioned, so I just rolled back the driver as said and it worked!
Device manager couldn't find Intel ICH9M-E/M SATA AHCI anymore though. Don't know if that's gonna be a problem or not.

i have a t400 too... and same problems...
the soundcard is realy crappy
but you can solve the problem with puting your soundcard in 16bit mode (with 44100Hz)
that option is in the soundcard preference
16bit sound is for today stoneage... but its the only way how it works better(nearly problemless) at the moment...
i hope lenovo fix the soundcard problems... spdif is crap too btw...
Edit: @gibot the reinstall of that driver doesn't solve the problem on my t400

ok, thanks again. I confirmed that by switching the SATA setting in the bios from 'AHCA' to 'COMPATIBILITY' it completely eliminates the audio problems.
So my guess is that the intel matrix manager is the problem... unfortunately for those of us with Turbo Memory we cant get rid of the matrix manager without losing the ability to use the Turbo memory...
Ok i finally FIXED it...I downloaded the 184.108.40.2061 version of Intel Matrix Storage Manager (on a T400) and it fixed the crackling audio issues. Thanks!
