T400s No Sound

I have a one week old T400s that the sound has suddenly stopped working. The microphone is working and I have sound through the head phones but the speakers perhaps are dead?? Has anyone else had this problem??

YES!  I had to send my machine back for repair.  Apparently the system board needed replacement (a week on backorder).  After they replaced my system board, they said they needed to replace the system board, AGAIN (another backorder, of course - timeframe unknown per Lenovo support)!  At this point I decided to return the laptop since Lenovo had had my laptop 3x longer than I had and it was more than a month into its year warranty. 

I ordered a replacement laptop in the hopes that I just got a dud the first time around.  Keeping my fingers crossed.

Umm... thats not good news. I am assuming that you bought something else not Lenovo?

Actually, I did; I was hoping my first laptop was an anomaly.

My new laptop arrived 2 days ago - sound worked fine.  I installed Ubuntu 64-bit and the sound still worked ... at first.  Shortly thereafter the sound stopped working on new laptop, same as before.  I installed 32-bit Ubuntu to see if that made a difference - none.  Finally, as a last measure I performed a factory restore of XP - still no more sound through speakers (headphones still worked fine).

I just got off the phone with support and will be returning this laptop for good once the sales department opens.  I've been a Thinkpad user for about 5 years and I previously had only great things to say about them.  Sadly, I think this will be the last time I ever order or recommend a Thinkpad.

That is a real shame and makes me wonder what to do as I really like the laptop for all the obvious reasons. Would Lenovo like to comment on this thread as to whether lightening strikes twice or there is a known design issue that needs to be resolved?? Thx John

I had similar problems. But after I downgraded the BIOS to 2.12

Now it works, but with the current 3.01 BIOS it doesn´t. Which BIOS do you have on your T400?

Hello,

I just purchased a T400s and the speakers don't seem to work. Operating System: Vista Business 64 bit.

I've tested sound with headphones and it works fine this way. Sound is not muted and everything was checked (volume, etc.) several times before asking for help.

The BIOS of the system is already updated:

BIOS version 1.06

(6HET21WW)

I don't know how to proceed now. Any hints?

Same problem here, brand new T400s, only using W7 RTM 64bit. Speakers worked for a while but are now dead silent. Sound through the headphones though... Waiting for official W7 drivers before calling the machine in for service...

Maybe a reinstallation of the audio drivers will help bt have not tried that yet.

Thx for the reply. I am indeed running the latest BIOS Version and would like to try the BIOS 2.16-1.01 Version however it seems elusive?? Do u know where I could get a copy. Thx John
